New Yorkers under 30 plan to flee city, says new poll; cite high taxes, few jobs as reasons
ALBANY - Escape from New York is not just a movie - it's also a state of mind.

A new Marist College poll shows that 36% of New Yorkers under the age of 30 are planning to leave New York within the next five years - and more than a quarter of all adults are planning to bolt the Empire State.

The New York City suburbs, with their high property values and taxes, are leading the exodus, the poll found.

Of those preparing to leave, 62% cite economic reasons like cost of living, taxes - and a lack of jobs.

"A lot of people are questioning the affordability of the state," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

3. Fine with me.
The city is crowded like never before in the 16 years I've been here. Worst job of planning urban growth that I can think of.

A "now or never" move because of the economy. The more things change the more they... you know.

6. They can't afford an apartment. Period.
There is no attempt to find a way to keep people in their own communities. Children leaving home have no way to afford to live near family and friends. NONE. The low-rent jobs are gone and so is the low-rent housing.

They would pay the taxes if they could pay the rent. But they can't. So they yell about the taxes. But it isn't the taxes. It's the apartment and the job.

There used to be all sorts of cheap, tiny, creepy-crawly, horrible so-called apartments for the young beginners to move into as they worked at low-paid creepy jobs on their way to fame and fortune or close enough. But they don't exist anymore and no attempt has been made to replace them.

Literally zero thought has gone into housing for trustfundless young people.

What a shock that they're leaving.

10. I doubt this is a new development. Most people don't like paying huge amounts for a small place...

indefinitely. Go in, build your resume, and either leave to take a job elsewhere or move to the suburbs and start a family has long been a pattern for NYC.
