Rachel Maddow screwed up tonight.
Not a serious mistake, but one nonetheless.

She had Joe McCarthy going after Hollywood, looking for Commies.
It was the House Un-American Activities Committee, not McCarthy, who went after Hollywood commies.

McCarthy went after commies he saw in our government.

1. It was Huckabee's HIStory
that had Reagan fighting communism in Hollywood, because he was a friendly witness for Joe McCarthy.

2. The term McCarthyism encompasses both.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McCarthyism

The most famous examples of McCarthyism include the speeches, investigations, and hearings of Senator McCarthy himself; the Hollywood blacklist, associated with hearings conducted by the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC); and the various anti-communist activities of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) under Director J. Edgar Hoover. McCarthyism was a widespread social and cultural phenomenon that affected all levels of society and was the source of a great deal of debate and conflict in the United States.

3. HUAC was first.
Edited on Fri May-13-11 02:03 AM by Archae
HUAC went after the "Hollywood commies" in the late 40's, McCarthy knew a good thing when he saw it, so he concocted his infamous "list."

Reagan just about *WAS* a commie himself, until he got jobs from right-wing businesspeople.
