Radio Company Websites Settle Copyright Cases With Newspaper Representative

May 11, 2011 at 4:00 AM (PT)

CITADEL and RADIO ONE have both settled copyright cases with RIGHTHAVEN LLC, the firm that is suing website operators for re-posting articles and photos from the LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL and DENVER POST.

The LAS VEGAS SUN's VEGAS INC. reports that CITADEL settled the case involving CITADEL Talk WPRO-A-WEAN-F/PROVIDENCE's website and host MATT ALLEN for posting a photo from the DENVER paper in a caption contest; RADIO ONE, INTERACTIVE ONE LLC, and SEAN ANTHONY also settled over use of the same photo.

RIGHTHAVEN has come under fire for filing 274 lawsuits since MARCH 2010 against websites and message board posters for using the papers' material, even with attribution and links.

Citadel Broadcasting settles Righthaven lawsuit

Even as its lawsuit model is under attack, Las Vegas copyright enforcer Righthaven LLC has reached additional settlements including one with high-profile defendant Citadel Broadcasting Co.

Righthaven disclosed in court papers last week it settled with Las Vegas-based Citadel and Citadel radio talk show host Matt Allen under undisclosed terms.

Citadel was sued Feb. 24 over allegations one its radio stations in Providence, R.I., had posted on its website without authorization a Denver Post TSA pat-down photo as part of a caption contest.

Righthaven is the copyright enforcer for the Denver Post and the Las Vegas Review-Journal that since March 2010 has filed 274 lawsuits against bloggers, message board posters and website operators.
