Does Rachel Maddow Drive a Gas Guzzling SUV???
I just heard her say she had to put over $75 worth of gas in her vehicle this weekend!

That tells me her gas tank is about 20 gallons or more.

I always thought she'd be a hybrid owner.

1. In New York, that might not be a SUV
My car takes nearly $50 to fill here in Ohio.

@4.49/gallon 17 gallons would cost a bit more than $75.

She hauls dirt and dogs and wood and garbage and junk in it.
I assure you she is not driving it back and forth to work every day.

3. Having a 20-gal. tank doesn't mean the vehicle isn't fuel-efficient.
The thing that matters is miles per gallon, not the size of the tank.

I was looking at the Elantra, the smaller version. Small 4 cylinder engine, but hey the gas mileage is great.

I saw that the new Elantra's had really good gas mileage. They were pretty roomy for a small car too.

16. You hurt your fuel economy driving around with a full tank as it is added weight
you don't need UNLESS the convenience of filling up less often matters more OR you don't have good access to gas stations.

That is the only useful thing I will add to this thread.

41. The fact that it has a 20-gallon tank does not make it a gas-guzzler.
Edited on Wed May-11-11 10:25 PM by The Velveteen Ocelot
If you have a vehicle that gets, say, 40 mpg, and you have a 20-gal. tank, what you have is a vehicle that gets you a long way (800 miles) before you have to spend another $75. If, however, you have a vehicle with a 20-gal. tank (or a 10-gal. tank, or a 50-gal. tank) that gets only 10 mpg, now you have a gas-guzzler. The size of the tank is irrelevant to whether a vehicle is inefficient.

But it still raises my hackles to hear rich people mention how they had to spend a whole $75 to fill their tank.

I've never had to pay more than $40. And trust me, our gas is a LOT more expensive than yours.

Let's instead look at the carbon and pollution she puts into the air.

I don't care if she is "on our side" or whatever, it is everybody's duty to reduce their footprint on this earth, left, right or center, famous or not, on our side or not.

53. I just spent $39 for a little over a half tank of gas in a Honda Accord in NC
I paid $3.82/gallon. I just did a quick check. If she's buying in NYC, prices are higher -- the cheapest I found was $4.09/gallon. MA was pretty comparable to my area in NC. She doesn't need to be driving a gas guzzler to pay that amount -- I would have paid very close to that if I'd been running on empty.

The only positive here is I suspect many, like me, are carefully planning trips. I don't have to commute anymore and drive very little these days. When gas prices get this high, I plan even more carefully than I usually do in order to consolidate trips. I think the environment wins when prices get this high. Unfortunately, it comes at the price of really hurting lots of people at a time when the hurt is devastating to many.
