Revised ‘Net Censorship Bill Requires Search Engines To Block Sites, Too
By Nate Anderson May 11, 2011 | 11:07 am |

Surprise! After months in the oven, the soon-to-be-released new version of a major U.S. Internet censorship bill didn’t shrink in scope — it got much broader.

Under the new proposal, search engines, internet providers, credit card companies, and ad networks would all have cut off access to foreign “rogue sites”– and such court orders would not be limited to the government. Private rightsholders could go to court and target foreign domains, too.

As for sites which simply change their domain name slightly after being targeted, the new bill will let the government and private parties bring quick action against each new variation.

Get ready for the “PROTECT IP Act.”

1. and, of course, they can name any site "rogue" they please, with no explanation, no criteria,
nothing. how very handy for them. how long before they extend that to sites within the country?

2. net neutrality is our last lifeline to the truth
that's why it's being targeted and not enough people care.

won't be long before "rogue sites" like DU aren't available to us and we will have no means to access the ideas and information essential to democracy...or what's left of it.

3. That is a good point.
They always seem to start with something and then expand it, and expand it, etc.

If we don't put the brakes on censorship, which has both commercial and ideological ramifications for those who control the information, then we will just find ourselves on a slippery information slope, sliding towards total control.

is one of the most important issues out there right now that nobody is talking about...

It is indeed or last lifeline to the truth just like you said. The net is one thing the giant corporations have yet to totally control, and it's damn sure not for lack of trying.

5. Not many realize it, but we don't need the internet as it works.
We all have these wireless routers hanging out, and with only slight modification, they could form a mesh network, and perhaps if they were fast enough, give us good enough service to basic things: free.
