28. I don't have a Kindle
But it reads like all your books are on your Kindle Amazon account. You'll just need to hook the new one up to your computer and log into you Kindle Amazon account and download from there. They won't be organized like you had them before though.

If it's other documents (not Amazon books) you'll hook your old Kindle up to your computer, go to My Computer and your Kindle will be a device there. Then move the files on to your computer and then after you get the new one, do the reverse.

their new Cloud music service, I found they actually have pretty decent technical support. If you go online and request help with respect to Kindle, it should give you the option to have them immediately call you. They they can help walk you through it. (Don't be afraid to ask for a tech person, since the first line person is usually just a general customer service type).

Good luck and watch that preoccupation/distraction that can make you "clumsy" or careless. Been there, for sure! I know I am in that "danger" zone when I find I've driven somewhere with no memory of how I got there... (Seems my car, like a good horse, knows its own way home) ;)

But the story is the bottom line to me, so however the story gets delivered to my brain is fine with me.

Besides, I have a small place, and 4,000 books would have me sleeping in the hallway. :)

Fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biographies, etc.

Granted, I can't fit them ALL on my Kindle because it's over 30gb in size... but I keep them on a thumb-drive "to go". I never run out of material to read. :)

My library room has over 1500 books in it and it takes up one wall and half of another. The room is 12X12. the shelves are 6 feet tall. In electronic format I probably have another 6000 books.

17. Oh seabeyond! Sounds like you have a lot on your plate!
Please take care of yourself....

As for the kindle, my screen broke on the one I got for Christmas too. I didn't drop it though, I have no idea how it broke as it was in my carry-on luggage at the airport in it's case. It was fine when I was reading before take-off but messed up when I got home.

There is a toll free service number and they replaced my kindle for free! You may still be under warranty. I don't have the number off hand but I just googled "Amazon Kindle Service" and called this number: 1-866-321-8851. You have to leave your name and number and they called me back, but they DID call me right back. FWIW, I'm not thrilled with this product as this is the second time the screen's broken with no real apparent reason.

Good luck, you may not even need to tell your husband if they'll simply replace it. For mine kindle, the books were loaded onto the new replacement one by Amazon for me, in the groupings that I had already arranged.

19. If you can manage another site to deal with stuff try goodreads
lets you categorize your books, read reviews, write them etc. It can help you keep track of books you've read and book you want to read, another alternative might be to dl the kindle's app for your desktop so you can also keep them organized off the actual kindle.

Then there is also Calibre lets you download and manage your kindle ebooks.

72. Free books...
Same here.

I don't think I paid more than $20 for the 108 books I have on mine.

Some of them are even books I've read multiple times in their printed versions over the years and now I have them permanently, as opposed to having to replace them when they fall apart from use.

Just wondering...did you have any sort of cover on your Kindle? I bought one of those leather covers with the elastic closure. I don't know how well it would protect the Kindle from a drop, but I'm thinking at least the plastic cover wouldn't crack.

i was telling another poster, my problem is i read while i am walking thru the house and tend to run into walls and doorways. the doorway got the kindle last night.

hey... is there any hidden places for me to look for free books on the amazon site. i go to the ones that are obvious on the front page of ebooks, but just checking to see if there may be a horde of them i havent checked out yet....

49. That's one of the reasons I'm not getting an e-book reader.

That and I am the kind of person that is very uncomfortable with not having an actual physical book that is MINE. A friend who is into astrology said that is from being a Tarus with Capricorn moon.

I'm a book hoarder! :)

52. I'm also a book hoarder.
I'm also unlikely to let people borrow my books either, since I've had some that weren't returned. I need to have my precious precious books. :)

69. I used to be a hoarder as well!
But then I realized I mostly read mysteries and it's not like I'm going to re-read most of them ... lol

I keep reference books now, and literature that I would re-read or want my kids to read as they get older. Other than that I am addicted to Kindle. It is lightweight so I can carry it with me (which is great with my arthritis).

I still have a stash of real books around...the ones I couldn't get in a Kindle edition.

But yeah...the smell and feel of real books that are mine...you can't beat it.

53. I think you can. Someone told me you can send a friend a copy of a book
that you have on kindle. Go on amazon.com Type in kindle books. They have a place you ask questions. By the way I saw not to long ago they had kindle on sale for $114.00. check.

57. As others have said, all will be well. They have given you good advice about how to get set back up.
I would like to just add one more thing.

http://www.amazon.com/Marware-SportGrip-Silicone-Display-Generation/dp/B0046A8YAI/ref=sr_1_8?s=fiona-hardware&ie=UTF8&qid=1305086576&sr=1-8

I got one of these for my Kindle and I really like it. Fits great and gives a little added protection against bumps, keeps it from slipping on smooth surfaces, and give you a little better grip on the Kindle. I feel much more secure handling my Kindle with it on. :)

Just my $.02.

89. Ahhh, I see.
You have one of the folio style cases with a light. If that is the the case, you may not want/need a sleeve. I prefer to hold my Kindle "naked" (except for the silicone sleeve). I have a zippered pouch to put it in for storage/protection. It's a snug fit with the sleeve on, but it works fine. It has another zipper on the front where I keep my clip-on light.

Everyone seems to have a preference on how they like to hold the Kindle (in a folio or naked), so I guess that is up to you to decide, but I thought I would throw the idea out there since I am really happy with my sleeve.

Happy reading!! (But watch where you are going!! LOL)

profits go to cancer research at a university. They cost under $4 each.

I dropped one once, and picked it up and continued reading. Many of the books are those that have been removed from various library shelves.

Are kindles among those items made by exploited workers in China that I read about on another thread? http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=439&topic_id=1077323&mesg_id=1077323

75. Support of exploitation by others is ok as long as I don't spend the
money on the products myself. That distinction is good to know.

That means I can 'give' money to a cousin, and that cousin can then buy me stuff from, say, Walmart, and the non-exploitation, non-support of an anti-union company will remain intact.

Who knew.

83. And I have a Pickett slide rule on a shelf over the desk. BUT
my point is/was this: There will be a thread started re supporting union corps/businesses and people jomp on that bandwagon with a chorus of "Me, I do that. Look over here!"

And another thread telling us how workers who manufacture the stuff we buy in some stores are exploited and a chorus of "You are right! Those owners are terrible creatures. I never set foot in those stores."

And a broken kindle pops up. Oh no, what to do. Never mind that so many of our electronic devices are made in those places with terrible creatures for owners, where the workers are exploited, and the products are sold in the 'bad' stores we like to say we avoid.

The truth is we will not give up these trinkets. We will buy them from stores on the 'approved' list or if they don't have them we will scurry into one the 'bad' stores.

And if *that* doesn't work, we can hold our principles high by saying it was a gift - a gift that is a product of the same exploited people in a non-union store but that's ok because if someone else buys it for us it doesn't count against us.

How hard would it be to say "I buy what I want when I want it from the place that has the best price."

And I still know how to use that slide rule.

go find me jumping up and down in any of those threads. you dont know jack shit and because of your own agenda you are dumping it on me.

screw that.

and i purposely gave little "discussion" the last comment that it was clear you wanted a fight about it that i have no interest in participating and wasting my time in.

kinda like i dont go into all those threads you are discussing because of my own beliefs. i do not feel the need to clarify and justify and explain.... to you

68. If you have any difficulty call Amazon customer support -
I have found them to be extremely helpful. All your purchases are backed up online - you can go into your account on Amazon and re-download them easily. I would call the tech support though because maybe there is an even easier way than loading them one by one.

84. Try not to be too worried about yourself. It's probably just a bad day. Quicksand.
Spending the day a bit ticked at yourself for bumping the other car - distracted - boom goes the Kindle. Everybody has bad days.

However if you find yourself dropping things a lot (excessively) over the next few days/weeks - make sure you get in to see the neurologist.

I wish you all the best with your books. I have many on my Kindle for BlackBerry. It would be the most upsetting thing about losing my phone.
