Police sweep arrests parents for kids' skipping

In what prosecutors and police describe as the first sweep of its kind, bench warrants were issued for the arrests of six parents.

ORANGE – Authorities launched a sweep to crack down on chronic truants in Orange County on Tuesday, but this time, it was the parents who faced detention – not their school-skipping children.


Natividad Arteaga-Perez tearfully walks while handcuffed to the police car after turning herself in to authorities in Santa Ana. She was arrested on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, her daughter, because the girl has been absent from school too many times.

A citation and a fine would be one thing, but jail is really overkill.
