Missing their humans: These puppies are just two of hundreds of pets hoping to be reunited with their owners at the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter in Tuscaloosa, Ala. The animals were separated from their families during last week's devastating tornado.

5. Maybe the only good thing from Katrina
is that animal rescue now kicks in immediately, and people have become aware that animals are part of the families.

That got hardly any responses, but the dogs..... yup, the dogs rule.

16. Ooooh, Judgy McJudgypants!
When Katrina hit I did two things. First, I sent $20 to the Lousiana SPCA (easy to do online, and I had $20 easily available)

Then I sent out invitations to my friends for a New Orleans themed party, asking them to bring a check made out to the Red Cross for any amount.

We ordered a case of Mardi Gras beads from Baton Rouge, played zydeco music, made a giant muffuletta, and served Hurricanes (tacky, yes, but tasty).

We ended up raising over $2000, which we mailed off the next day. So my donation ratio was 1:100 pets:people.

I think most people who love animals do what they can on both fronts.

enough compassion in our hearts for both the people and the animals. It is not mutually exclusive.

Please see my post #22 about what happened after Katrina.

Animals were saved: human lives were NOT.

Right now in Tuskaloosa there are poor people homeless and starving. They are BEGGING for help. It is time to look at our priorities.

21. People are not, for the most part, are not completely dependent on others.
Animals are completely dependent on us.

I am glad to see this relatively new effort to see to ease needless suffering of fuzzbutts.

If only I could be the person my dog thinks I am.

22. So, let people die.
It is NOT new. The ASPCA came *before* any effort on behalf of children. As a matter of fact, CHILDREN were even sent to animal rescue shelters for CARE, because there was nothing for CHILDREN.

Of COURSE many people are "dependent" -- There is no place where you can go to find a piece of land to build your own house if you have no money. There is no place to just get food for yourself if you have no money. I'm sure you realize that the frontier is gone, and there are no more beaver pelts for the taking.

It is clear there is a sizeable number of the population of this country who don't really concern themselves with the welfare of people. Animals take precedence.

After Katrina, when the media focus was off the people who had nothing and nowhere to go, they were killing themselves while affluent people were going to NOLA to "rescue" animals and "foster" them and adopt them out.

Human SUICIDE didn't matter. The "fuzzbutts" did. NOTHING NEW ABOUT THAT.

Skewed priorities.

You could just as easily said...

Humans die while people go to Starbucks
Humans die while people watch TV
Humans die while people exercise
Humans die while people post on DU

Humans dying while people do <fill in the blank> does not equal Humans die BECAUSE people <fill in the blank>

What about me?? Humans can fend (or should be able to) for themselves. For 57 years, I have faced adversity few would ever dream of. I'm still here in my home because I have done what ever needed to be done to make it so.

Domesticated animals can not fend for themselves.

edit for spelling

If people care about the animals, that doesn't mean they don't care about the humans caught in the destruction.

Most minds can handle more than one thing.

Again, you apparently think in binary terms.

If you don't care about the animals, then restrict yourself to threads about the people.

33. I don't discourage any displays of compassion, either for humans or for animals.
I don't know any people who care about animals, who don't care about people, too. In fact, the two tend to go hand in hand.

I can't fathom how scolding people for showing compassion to any living creature is helpful.

Are you really saying we shouldn't care about the animals because people are hurting? I've got news for you, there are always people hurting, every damn day. So according to you, we should never help the animals, which is a world I would not care to live in.

13. Perhaps when recovery happens
and the humans find their dogs, Ceaser Milan will make a visit with his show Dog Whisperer to help the pets deal with the trauma.

Quite honestly, I'm a cat person, but I watch every one of his shows. He is a MASTER - almost a magician, with dogs and of course, "people behavior" toward their dogs. His shows are engaging, informative and some of the best television I watch with my grandchildren.

If you get the National Geographic channel, I HIGHLY recommend you check out his shows! And I just bet we will see him out in Alabama at some point helping these poor puppies. Bless their hearts.

Annette

46. I think the argument between people and animals misses the point--
The whole point of this is to restore to those who have lost all--home, clothes, memories, maybe even family members, a beloved pet--i.e. one part of that lost life. And likely an important one at that.

This isn't about just saving random animals as with the ASPCA, but neglecting people. It's about saving those animals so that they can be re-united with their owners. Thus, saving these pets is as much for the people as getting them food, clothing and shelter. You can put it last in that list, and that's fine, but restoring this family member to them does matter and will make a difference, and so it should matter to us as well. It is, in the end, completely wrong to say that in helping these pets we're neglecting the people--to the contrary, in helping the animals, which frantic owners are likely worried sick about--we are helping the people. We are taking care of their pets for them when they can't, and I think most of them would be relieved to know that, and to know their pet will be there for them when they can take care of it again, not dead from starvation or injury.

48. Thank you!
It's absolutely not an either/or, it's a both/and. The people who have lost their beloved pets are just as traumatized as the animals, and if a happy reunion can be facilitated, if the people can get at least one member of their family back, that is NOT something to look down on.

The physical and mental health benefits of pets have been studied a lot. They're very, very real. And the trauma of losing one in a disaster is just as real. Worse than losing anything else- pets are not OBJECTS, they're family members who give comfort and unconditional love.
