Shep Smith Makes On Air Request That Faux News File A FOIA To Get Bin Laden Photo
Edited on Wed May-04-11 11:43 PM by Turborama
In the days since the announcement of Osama bin Laden’s death, Fox News’ Shepard Smith has been doing a lot of thinking out loud and some very interesting thoughts are coming out. Just earlier this afternoon, he stated that he was skeptical of the government’s account of the capture. Later he wondered aloud whether they’d be able to make a Freedom of Information Act request to acquire the Bin Laden death photo. After mulling it over for a few seconds, he made up his mind and asked the Fox News lawyers to get started on it right there on the air.

Smith made it clear that he had no real interest in seeing the grizzly (sic) photo himself, but explained that, as a news organization in America, this is exactly what they need to be doing.

It was a pretty intriguing moment. You can watch the clip from Faux News here: http://www.mediaite.com/tv/shep-smith-makes-on-air-request-that-fox-news-file-a-foia-to-get-bin-laden-photo/

2. They can justify denying a FOIA request based on Nat. Security
I've seen FOIA requests denied for far less.

3. 'grizzly photo'???? Here it is:

I think you mean 'grisly'.

Definition of GRISLY

1
: inspiring horror or intense fear <houses that were dark and grisly under the blank, cold sky — D. H. Lawrence>
2
: inspiring disgust or distaste <a grisly account of the fire>
— gris·li·ness noun

4. Good point, but it wasn't written by me.

I only edited to change the 'news' station's name for accuracy, the rest was left unaltered.

On edit, I've added (sic) to make that clear.

5. Just because you can do something
doesn't mean you should. I see no good coming from releasing these photos.

The fake ones are bad enough.

6. People who don't know the difference between "grizzly" and "grisly"
shouldn't be working in journalism in any capacity, except perhaps to empty out the paper shredders at night when the ofice shuts down.

11. I hate it, but I agree with Shep. It's OUR photo, not the photo of those working for us...
But they never work for us in regards to anything else, like progressive taxation, universal health care and education, more strict labor laws, etc... So why should this be any different?

12. Ummmm no it isn't....
...and Shep may as well file a FOIA request for the missing videotapes from the gas station opposite the Pentagon from 9/11 while he's at it...he'll get the same response...Nada...

16. Yes it is.
Whether it should be kept Top Secret is a separate issue.

I am very glad for FOIA.

13. Winner, winner, chicken dinner
I paid for it; I didn't want it any more than I want those slick ads in the newspapers and magazines and on teevee ad nauseam extolling the dubious virtues of our national military (though the dress uniforms are undeniably snappy). I see all the things that went into the making of a murder, including Brian Williams giving a wet and sloppy to the SEALs. Why can't I see the end result, the inevitable product of the process I'm paying for? I don't suppose I'll like it any better than all the other stuff foisted upon me, but why is the government getting so suddenly squeamish?

17. You can FOIA classified info
but the Feds will deny it. Stupid Smith should know this. Now 10,000 tea baggers will FOIA these photos, and 50 federal employees will spend the next month writing letters how classified information that can impact national security is not subject to FOIA law. Waste of time and money!
