My son-in-law is in Kandahar
Edited on Wed May-04-11 09:43 PM by SHRED
I absolutely oppose the release of any OBL photos that would increase his chances of being harmed.

If anyone has an issue with that...they can go to Hell.

29. I appreciate your S-I-L's service
I apologize if my remark came across as me being unconcerned for his, or any other soldier's, safety. I want everyone to return home safely. My point is that our enemies will try their best to kill us regardless of any photos. It is illogical to think that photos of a dead OBL would motivate our enemies more than the killing of OBL.

39. And it is delusional to think...
that providing fuel to the fire does not increase the flames.

Why do you think the media has been forbidden to provide photos
of the dead US soldiers?

Hint- Any visual artist can tell you an image is
more powerful than a thousand words.

"Think before you post" is always a good rule to follow.
Your comment was extremely unthoughtful.

49. The military was sued to allow pictures of the caskets of US soldiers
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/10/06/uttm/main647904.shtml

updated 4/28/2005 7:14:57 PM ET

A journalism professor sued the government Monday to force the Defense Department to release pictures of flag-draped coffins of soldiers arriving in the United States from wars overseas.

Ralph Begleiter, a professor at the University of Delaware and a former world affairs correspondent for CNN, filed suit under the Freedom of Information Act for the release of government photos and video of coffins arriving at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, calling them “an important part of the record of war – the history of war.

“I think the American people ought to be able to use those photographs as part of the many ways they assess the costs of war,” Begleiter told CBS News Correspondent Melissa McDermott.

The Pentagon has refused to release those photos, saying it has begun enforcing a policy installed in 1991 intended to respect the privacy of the families of the dead soldiers.

Critics counter the government is trying to hide the human cost of the war from the public.

The photos were released 2 years ago:

http://articles.boston.com/2009-02-27/news/29259338_1_pentagon-news-conference-families-united-secretary-robert-m-gates

February 27, 2009

The Defense Department, under pressure from open-government advocates, released hundreds of images Thursday of flag-draped coffins of American soldiers.

The department had previously refused to release such images, which were taken by military photographers. Nor has it allowed the news media to photograph ceremonies of soldiers’ coffins arriving in the United States, saying it is enforcing a policy installed in 1991 to respect the privacy of families of dead soldiers.

The pictures were released in response to a request for all military photos of caskets containing the remains of American soldiers taken since the United States launched its attack on Afghanistan in October 2001. Some critics have contended the government is trying to hide the human cost of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

No more than adding three gallons of gasoline to an already existing bonfire; only by mere degrees do the flames react. However, I imagine that should one's loved-one be included in that 'mere degrees' is becomes something other than an academic exercise.

41. I'll jump in here and answer...
While I agree that those involved with what happened at Abu Ghraib should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, I did not think that the public needed to see the pictures. You might want to look up what happened to Nick Berg.

I also don't think OBL's picture should be released. In both situations it adds gas to the already burning fire and puts not only our troops in danger but civilians as well. There are worse things than being shot dead as a form of retaliation, and don't think for moment that's not where it would go.

Just my opinion, as someone who also has/has had family serving in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Of course photos of OBL's dead face could be used to recruit. In a part of the world where pictures of Muhammad, can cause riots, of course these photos would have a huge impact.

I don't get why some of the dis-respectful posters in this thread, don't GET this.

Confirm the internet and computer you are requesting and you have to fill out your details proving you are American. Somehow with the tech of today maybe this can be done so only American citizens would get to see the pictures. And put restrictions that the press couldn't publish them for national security reasons.

I'm really interested to see the picture myself, and I feel strongly I have a right to see it as an American citizen.

58. With all due respect, your son in law might be a medic but he is a soldier first.
While on medical duty as a "Combat Medic" (not as a peacemaker) he still carries a weapon of war which he is expected to use according to the training he has been given.

The release or not of OBL's pictures (which release I oppose strongly for reasons other than a concern for soldiers that know the risks involved in a military career) would not endanger him any more than the risks he has today.

I wish him well and hope he is reunited with all his family soon. I specially applaud his commitment and sacrifice, which are stronger than what others are willing to risk.

61. I seriously doubt the armed militias your son-in-law is fighting give a fuck about Bin Laden.
They're almost entirely paid mercenaries and local people who are angry at American invasion in their region. Only 8% of men in Afghanistan even know about 9-11. To most people there, we just invaded for some strange imperialist reason. No, I'm not going to co-sign your Bush era fantasy that your family is off fighting against Al-Qaida. He's not.

67. Probably right, but the photos might inflame anyway
just like the burning of a Koran, the publishing of the photos might temporarily incite indignant violence.

I'm not in favor of releasing the photos, but I suspect they'll leak. Panetta wants them released, so I expect a slip-up any day.

I hope all our relatives, friends, and others make it back safe & sane. Soon.

70. Wish only the best for your SIL . . . however . . .
- given that we killed OBL - worrying about what impact his photo would have is a bit like shutting the barn door after the horse has escaped - it's too late. The damage has already been done.
