President Obama Is The Real Deal
I haven`t posted here in a while, but amongst the RW hysteria over the birth certificate, the latest Bin Laden nonsense, I have found myself reflecting on Barack Obama.

Having spent 8 years in a country where a president and his party used every trick known to man to create a climate of extreme fear, by which the governed, I asked myself the question today, when has Barack Obama used fear? Certainly he has lost on some major decisions, decisions I wasn`t too happy about losing, and at times he has appeared to ignore the very people who got him elected, but surely that was only to be expected. He has been let down by his party. However, at no point has he ever resorted to the tactics of fear to cover his losses, as did the last muppet in the White House.

Hope is defined by the dictionary as "the feeling that what is wanted can be had or that events will turn out for the best", and the latest announcement of Bin Laden`s death meets that criteria, in fact, everything he has achieved meets that criteria. Do I want him to achieve more, absolutely, do I think a second term is necessary, again absolutely, but as Niebuhr stated so profoundly "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”

President Obama, and he is everyone`s president, is the real deal.

That`s it.

1. Your thoughtful viewpoint is deserving of a citizen op-ed or LTTE at the NYT or your local paper.
Thanks for coming back here to share it with those of us who get it.

5. Important point
Thank you for reminding us about the fear tactic.
You are so correct - Obama treats us like adults. He is not a manipulator. I had forgotten how oppressive that was under bush.

11. I also have great respect
for our president, Obama. He will be visiting 911 ground zero today and, I believe with the utmost respect for the people who died on that site. This will be unlike GWB who, in his time at the site, had himself photographed, on a pile of ruble, with the oldest and most frail fireman that he could find. He only wanted to appear larger and more forceful as a leader. Thank God that we now have a leader who can project leadership with his deeds and does not feel the need for a political show.

13. Regarding Osama
I have been having numerous conversations with many people today over the big question "Is he dead". I`m struggling to get the logic here. For 8 years, the Bush regime used the specter of Osama to implement the Patriot Act, spend trillions of dollars on a war built on lies and so much more. Some say he died 10 years ago, some say until we see the pictures we won`t believe it and so on. I really don`t care if he died 10 years, that is not the point. The point is that Obama has killed what Bin Laden represents, fear. Maybe he didn`t die a few days ago, but what he represents to people all over the globe did, and that is so important.

Gandhi said "It is weakness which breeds fear, and fear breeds distrust. There would be no one to frighten you if you refuse to be afraid." I have lived in this country for 10 years now, and I have seen a people psychologically terrorized by their own government, and Osama was the weapon through which they conducted their reign of terror. In one foul swoop, Obama has in many ways liberated not only America, but also the world. I don`t need to see his body, nor do I need to see photographs, it`s not a question of needing proof, nor is it a question of blindly accepting what my government tells me. Osama is dead, be it that he died 10 years ago or a few days ago, but until a few days ago, the fear remained. Now I believe people have hope again, and with hope can come change.
