Officials: SEALs thought bin Laden threatening (NEW from AP)
Edited on Wed May-04-11 07:07 PM by KoKo

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama said Wednesday he's decided not to release death photos of terrorist Osama bin Laden because their graphic nature could incite violence and create national security risks for the United States. Separately, officials told The Associated Press that the Navy SEALs who stormed bin Laden's compound shot and killed him after they saw him appear to lunge for a weapon.

The officials, who were briefed on the operation, said several weapons were found in the room where the terror chief died, including AK-47s and side arms. The officials, who were not authorized to speak publicly, commented only on condition of anonymity.

-snip-

The new word about the reason bin Laden was shot and killed rather than taken into custody came after changing White House accounts — first that bin Laden was armed, then that he wasn't — that raised questions about the rationale.

The officials who gave the latest details on Thursday also said that a U.S. commando grabbed a woman who charged toward the SEALs. The raiders were concerned, the officials said, that she might be wearing a suicide vest.

2. Oh, brother.
Can't we be grown up enough to call things by their name.

3. I don't care if they did or not...
He could have been sitting in a corner crocheting a blanket and I would have no problem with them walking in and putting a bullet into his head.

They don't need to justify their actions. And neither does Pres. Obama.

5. If they killed him because they felt threatened by the situation that to me
is justice, if it was just an outright execution from the get go, then it was just revenge and perhaps the lesser of two evils, the greater being the bombing of the compound risking the killing of even more innocent bystanders.

I believe that if we're to remain a nation of laws, we should hold ourselves to a higher standard than our enemies.

10. I guess in the "heat of battle" most folks don't know what's going on...
but there's just more and more "changes" to the story coming out that gets many of us who lived after Bush... Well..it get's our "spidey senses" on alert as to some bits that just don't "add up."

7. but ...WHY are they keep changing stories to "justify" their actions is what I want to know..
First Reports on Sunday just after the action when he gave his speech was really cool. A Dem President in Charge...but, it's gone down hill after that with quotes from Anonymous Officials constantly contradicting what Went Down on THAT MISSION to KILL OBAMA!

What's going on here that after that incredible speech from Obama Sunday Night when the "Mission" had just been completed that the Administration keeps REVISING ..OVER AND OVER the TRUE DETAILS of what went on with the Killing of Obama.

Inquiring Minds who Voted for Obama WANT TO KNOW!

I'm referring to your post #7, not your OP for the thread.

Look closely at the names.

16. Got it! It's that terrible misplacement of "b" for "s" that's going on everywhere.
Somebody posted out there today that we need to use President Obama and "Bin Laden" to stop this terrible first name use where the names are so similar that in the heat of writing that typos seem to be popping up everywhere. Here on DU just a "letter change" can make folks think you are a troll.

So, thanks. It was too late to edit...but hope so many other folks are doing this...that it can be forgiven.

11. I would have, also. But, I can see why it wouldn't have been possible.
There's the Backlog of Gitmo Cases that would have had their lawyers very angry if Osama had been placed there waiting on the Queue..given that others have never and will never EVER have hopes of a "fair trial."

If Obama wanted "closure" on "9/11" his best (pragmatic) option was to kill Osama so that he would never speak again and not be an object for Jihadists and others to use him as a Hero.

It was Obama's call and it was his decision and many DU'ers/Democrats are pleased with it and he seems to be a Hero to THEM for doing this "KILL." To others of us it doesn't sit well with our ethics and it reminds us of Bush/Cheney.

I guess we need to go "one more time" with Obama to see where he's going with getting us out of these Wars of Bush.

I guess I'm trying to give him some slack. It isn't easy...but it's worth it to see if we should vote for him another time? It's a "Wait and Watch" to see how he handles this down the line.

6. If you think someone is wearing a suicide vest, why shoot her in the leg?
This is making less and less sense with each retelling. They should release the helmetcam videos before all credibility is lost and this goes completely out of control.

15. And weapons in the compound! That would change a lot of things.
I agree. They need to release the helmet cam and let the chips fall as they may.
