At least to shut up the loony conspiracy freaks we unfortunately have in office.

1. I don't think that would shut up the loonies.
They would start screaming about photo-shop.

6. The only thing that will shut up the loonies is duct tape.
That's probably one of the reasons the WH decided not to publicly release a photo.

2. I agree. I think it is a good idea not to publish the photo. Those conspiracy
that he is not dead freaks will just say the photo is doctored anyhow, while some jihadist will just become more enrage. Good to not publish it.

3. "Congressman T. Baggers says 'I've seen the picture and I still don't believe it's him!'"
Releasing the pictures for the sake of shutting up baggers is pointless, but while gruesome it is documentary evidence of the raid and it will be released by the Administration when they feel the time is right.

It's already been sent out to our allies and it may leak that way as well.

It's pointless to say that it won't be released. Just not obviously released by the White House.

What happened to the sovereignity of We the People?

Anything besides, "He's dead, there are pictures but no one can see them," would be enough for most reasonable skeptics. Some people will never be placated but normal Americans aren't stupid.

12. Why do you want to see them?
Not snarkin', just asking.

Is it that you don't believe that he's dead?

14. America doesn't operate this way...
we don't kill off people with valuable intelligence. The operation proceeded in a way that implicated America, Bin Laden is gone, so we either captured him or killed him. Admitting to capture would paint us a ready target for every militant muslim in the world, so no matter what happened, the press release would have to say, "Osama is Dead."

We have networks and secret prisons and hoards of people trained to extract information from people just like him. American policy int he past has been to shuttle them into vast networks (Extraordinary Rendition) but we have the opportunity to take the head of a terrorist organization and we shoot him in the head? It's possible but uncharacteristic. I would want to see the pictures if I wanted the truth out there, but if we do have him, I wouldn't want that advertised either.

11. Actually, part of the problem with our nation is that we have
sanitized death. Movie screen death does not really get at what the real effects of brandishing weapons does. I do think that we need to get back to some of the real war reporting that took place during Viet Nam. People should be squeamish and they should see the price of war, for our enemies (military and civilian) and for our own troops. We spend too much time in our deodorized and sanitized suburban cookie cutter houses. Until you've experienced the stench and deprivation of war, you cannot empathize. The same goes for poverty.
