http://youtu.be/YuVpTH3ILDc Here are five things you should know about Rep. Virginia Foxx:
1. She worked in higher ed before taking the politics plunge.
The 67-year-old Foxx had a lengthy career on campus before being elected first to the North Carolina Senate, then to the U.S. House of Representatives. She taught English and sociology before working in college administration.
2. She may try to cut funding for colleges, and students.
Foxx battled the Obama administration on some higher-ed policies, including federal college loans. She also criticized President Barack Obama's goal to graduate 5 million more people from community colleges.
3. She's in favor of for-profit colleges.
One of the biggest controversies in higher education right now is the role of for-profit colleges, which stand accused of prioritizing profit over students. The Department of Education is tightening control of for-profit schools, but some speculate that Foxx may advocate to overturn the new rules. Foxx has received political donations from organizations tied to some for-profit colleges.
4. She doesn't have a keen sense of direction.
Earlier this week, Foxx caused some chuckles among D.C. watchers when she accidentally wandered into the Democrats' caucus room.
5. She's very conservative.
The American Conservative Union has bestowed upon Foxx a 100 percent approval rating. Perhaps her most controversial stance in recent years came in 2009, when she said that she didn't consider the murder of Matthew Shepard to be a hate crime.
