Just 2 words:

Tora Bora

I'll let the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator John Kerry, refresh your memory:

But the Al Qaeda leader would live to fight another day. Fewer
than 100 American commandos were on the scene with their Afghan allies and calls for reinforcements to launch an assault were
rejected. Requests were also turned down for U.S. troops to block
the mountain paths leading to sanctuary a few miles away in Pakistan. The vast array of American military power, from sniper
teams to the most mobile divisions of the Marine Corps and the
Army, was kept on the sidelines. Instead, the U.S. command chose
to rely on airstrikes and untrained Afghan militias to attack bin
Laden and on Pakistan’s loosely organized Frontier Corps to seal
his escape routes. On or around December 16, two days after writing his will, bin Laden and an entourage of bodyguards walked
unmolested out of Tora Bora and disappeared into Pakistan’s unregulated tribal area. Most analysts say he is still there today.
The decision not to deploy American forces to go after bin Laden
or block his escape was made by Secretary of Defense Donald
Rumsfeld and his top commander, Gen. Tommy Franks, the architects of the unconventional Afghan battle plan known as Operation
Enduring Freedom

2. I've often wondered about this...

Why?

3. Because Tora Bora is a treacherous region and they said the risks outweigh the rewards...
even tho we had troops right there where OBL was and they wanted to take him out right then and there.

7. ....but, but....
if they had gotten bin Laden before the Iraq invasion, then Saddam wouldn't have gotten caught and hanged! And Commander AWOL wouldn't have had the Iraq "legacy" he wanted.... and besides, Saddam was a "friend" of Rumsferatu, and who wouldn't like to visit an old "friend"?
So of course Rummy nixed it, and Tommy Franks just backed him up.
And Osama breathed a sigh of relief and went on his merry way.

8. Yes but you're forgetting
If Bush hadn't let him go at Tora Bora, forgot about him and turned his attention to Iraq and then dismantled the CIA unit that was hunting him, Bin Laden would have never felt safe enough to move into a luxurious mansion in the suburbs.

So obviously if it wasn't for Bush, Bin Laden would have been at the mansion where they found and killed him.

Bush's eight years in office were really an ingenious plan to give Bin Laden a false sense of security and kill him 10 years later. Brilliant!
