Wet blanket alert...
Sorry to bring this up.... but...the number of U.S. troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan passed the 6,000 mark, with 43,184 the official figure for the number wounded.

And then there's the $3 Trillion down the bowl.

In case anybody has forgotten, the US invaded Afghanistan, going after bin Laden... have been 10 years in that invasion/occupation. We got him with a small special forces team in a house an hour from the capital of an "ally".

The US invaded Iraq because of the lie that Saddam had aided bin Laden. If you don't think Iraq is more of a mess now than when this all started, the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis would beg to differ.

Our country is more of a police state than it has ever been... flown lately? Patriot Act ring a bell?

Oh... we got bin Laden all right, but before we hurt our collective arms patting ourselves on the back, we might look at the cost of the way this country chose to go about it.

3. you will soon be labeled an Obama basher and unpatriotic by some here.
Truth always hurts no matter which way it cuts, but there are some who'd rather be jingoistic about it.

You've been on DU since 2004, and you haven't seen anyone here looking at the cost of the pursuit of Bin Laden?

OK

7. I agree with most of this. However, I would beg to differ on our
reason for invading Iraq. The cover story the criminals in the Bush admin. sold to the American public was that Saddam had "weapons of mass destruction," which, of course, was a complete fabrication. The real reason was O-I-L and empire building. The US never acts out of anything but extreme self-interest and it seems to matter not how many innocents are slaughtered and troops sacrificed in the process.

11. Ironically, this was carried out the way the anti-war side said it should be carried out. K&R
As, essentially, a police action rather than through wars. Our pursuit of wars to capture/kill bin Laden has, as you say, harmed us far more than he and his comrades could even have imagined.

12. Obama should declare victory and bring everyone home. We
are not going to get much more than this asshole's death out of these stupid wars and, Lord knows, we need to get back to getting our own house in order - the money being spent could certainly be used for better causes, like making sure our own people are at the very least fed and clothed.

13. The way it went down only proves the lie
this is not a "war" against terrorism. It is a series of covert actions. We do NOT need to be engaged in a land mess anywhere to "fight" terrorism. We can do it with ten well trained blokes* and a couple of helicopters.

* I made up this number.
