Stonington - On a Monday night in November 2008, Carol Ruffo was expecting a phone call from her son, David Rohde, a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter for The New York Times, who was back in Afghanistan working on a book about the war.

"It was unusual. He always used to call me when he said he would," she said one morning earlier this week while sitting in the living room of her Lords Point home. "I was getting more and more worked up about it."

(snip)

"I could tell something was wrong," Carol recalled.

"Pull over the car, Mom," Lee told her.

5. Heh. Thanks.
A lot of us remember him being held by the Serbs. It was a lot of work getting him back that time, not much we could do with the Taliban. He knew it, and got his own self back this time.

4. Great story. They are stronger people than I think I would
be under those circumstances.

6. I heard this story I think on NPR on my way home for Thanksgiving.
Both David Rohde and his wife were being interviewed about her book about the incident.

11. Secrecy
was essential in this case. But, it must have been hard to remain silent, especially when there were so many doubts about the validity of information being received. So happy for the outcome. I hope David Rohde can do his reporting from safer locations in the future.
