5. .
I wont shy away from speaking my mind, my friend, ever. Some like it, some don't, but that is all beside the point. This is, however, off topic, as this is the OP's thread with a specific focus, and I respect that. If you have something you'd like to say to me or talk to me about, feel free to pm me.

14. Without 9/11 there would be no Iraq War. Or, at least they would have had to...
...invent some other excuse. NBC was right to count Iraq as a consequence of 9/11. That's what sold it.

17. False.
There is no connection between the events of 9/11 and the Bush invasion of Iraq.

NO CONNECTION!!!

The fact that stupid Americans BELIEVE(D) there was a connection does not change the truth and for NBC to be peddling that hogwash 8 years later is obscene.

making sure it gives a BJ to its corporate parent.

30. As I remember 9-11 was the excuse Bush gave for invading Iraq.
It was the seed for both wars, one for revenge, the other for profit.

12. It's a good comparison.
There was no punctuation to any war since VJ Day. Korea, Vietnam, etc. had no final victory (or surrender) for the US. At last we have met an objective. We went to Afghanistan to get bin Laden.

We got him. Obama gets one trophy they cannot dispute. There will be a movie.

It's been like a soccer game with no scoring for ten years. Somebody finally scored.

15. Meeting an objective is not the same as an enemy surrendering and a war ending.
Did al qaeda surrender today?

It's a totally ignorant and uneducated comparison.

Quite typical of the mainstream media.

21. Let's apply some perspective...
This is an asymmetric war, not a sovereign. I really don't expect the "enemy" to surrender any more than in the war on crime or the war on drugs, etc.

But when you slay the leader of an enemy cult of personality, that's a significant victory. Can't point to so clear a victory for the US since Nagasaki.

23. That's Bozo-talk.
You're not applying "perspective", your contorting the facts, and in doing so, you reveal that the comparison is not apt, but absurd.

28. You have me figured out -- but not what I said.
Sure, I'm as stupid as it gets, so you don't have to address my statements at all. Right?

You don't have to even supply a single instance whereupon I "contorted" (is that a pastry?) the facts. (But I think DU is waiting for an example.)

This is not the biggest victory ever, but it marks a significant, no down side, victory and demonstration of US competence.

18. I say embrace the victory and make the event as big as possible.
Edited on Sun May-01-11 11:21 PM by backscatter712
In political science terms, this is known as a focusing event, and it can change fundamentally the zeitgeist of the country. Doesn't always, but it can.

We very well may have some new support for bringing the troops home - now we can declare victory!

No guarantees - the military-industrial complex wants us in perpetual war, but it'll be harder and harder to drum up support for military adventurism now that their Emmanuel Goldstein is dead.

25. I'd say this is a win for the military industrial complex
With the war floundering, this gives them a little boost.

And I suspect there will be another Emmanuel Goldstein along soon enough.
