What is procedure for getting multiple same headline threads combined?

Often I see a thread where the mods have combined the same story.
More often I see several threads with same story, posted over a couple hours time.
recent example:
Bristol Palin's dancing prompts man to shoot his TV

several threads on this have been posted over 5 minutes apart.

Is this something that can be/should be alerted on for the mods to combine?
If so, what is the procedure, I see no "checkbox" on the alert screen.

the obvious problem with many many same threads is it takes forever to scroll down down down
and go thru 3-4 pages before other recent threads can be viewed in GD.

Or maybe not a problem for anyone but me....?

1. This really only applies to the Latest Breaking News forum

We do not usually combine duplicate threads in General Discussion or other forums. But LBN has stricter rules -- the mods will combine duplicate stories in that forum when they become aware of them.

If you want to alert on a duplicate post in LBN you can use the checkbox for "Forum-specific or group-specific rule violation for forums and groups with special rules."

If you want, you can also use the comment box to note that it is a duplicate post -- you could even add a link to the original post which is being duplicated. That's completely optional of course, but it would help the moderators.
