1. They were more than crushed in 2008. Doesn't seem to be helping.

2. Not enough. Crushed
would leave about 22 Republicans in the Senate. I can dream.

3. 2008 merely crushed the neocons 'pubs. In 2010, we need to crush the DLC in the primaries.
The corporatists have to go.

16. Which ones? And more importantly who are their primary challengers?
There are thousands of general statements here about needing to squash conservative Democrats in the primaries, but pretty much no specifics on where anybody is trying to do this. These primaries start in just a few months. Chest-thumping isn't a substitute for a plan of action.

5. I would like to see that happen but judging by this board it appears that
Dems are too busy hating the President and other Dems in office.

8. Well, then the Dems had better get their act together,
tell their corporate minders where to shove their bribes, and do something for ordinary people for a change, something that isn't also a favor to some major corporation.

10. Eyes on the Prize...
Edited on Fri Nov-20-09 11:55 PM by YvonneCa
We Democrats need to remember what we have been fighting for. After the past eight years under GWB, the country was headed TOTALLY in the wrong direction...on every issue. EVERY issue. And they are important issues:

Getting it right in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Living up to our country's values.
Stopping illegal spying.
Health care Reform.
Changing energy policy/Climate Change.
Getting our economy on track.
Education.
Etc. Etc.

But our goal in 2004 was not JUST to elect John Kerry. We fought to elect a president who would start to turn the country around.

The goal in 2006 was not JUST to grow Democratic Party support in Congress (which we did). We fought to grow a Congress that would enact the needed changes to turn the country around.

The goal in 2008 was not JUST to elect Barack Obama President (which we also did :7). We worked hard to elect a president who would start to turn the country around.

We are in a better place today because we unified around our goal and fought hard to make it a reality. No matter which issue was our 'favorite' issue, we kept our "eyes on the prize." Obama's election was no accident. Nor did it happen 'magically'. It took determination, stamina, perseverance, relentless effort and FOCUS from Democrats of all stripes. :)

We Democrats have much to be proud of. But we haven't yet reached our goal. For 2010, we SHOULD grow Congress again... not JUST because we want more Democrats there, but because THAT is how we will turn the country around.

12. I agree-this is the GOP on the way out - we must see that they continue
to destroy themselves.

Find and support democratic candidates, make sure you are registered and get off your ass and vote.
You can bet the Republican voters will be out in force, and they vote a straight ticket-Dems tend to split tickets, weakening the party's position.
If you don't vote, you have no business complaining about the result.

13. Unemployment needs to go below 10% by July
It dips and people start to feel more secure, the Democrats will protect their weak spots and make a few pick-ups. It doesn't we will lose a few races we shouldn't. As of right now Ohio and Florida should be pick-ups in the Senate and there are 15 districts the President won but a GOP congressman also managed to survive for various reasons.

We could lose PA and Nevada in the Senate if things don't turn around, if it is a bad year, Lincoln Blanche might be on her way out (which the only reason I'd cry about is that her replacement will be insane not jut corrupt).

In a two party system when your choice is some-what sane but occassionaly really stupid and bat-shit crazy, bat-shit crazy will win when some-what sane isn't producing results people like.

Your base stays home, independents open themselves up to crazy, and the crazy base smelling blood in the water comes out in force.

14. I agree. I think 2010 will be fought on the economy ("it's the economy, stupid"), not
Afghanistan, health care reform, or immigration reform. They will all be issues, but the economy will be the biggest factor by far. It looks like unemployment will be above 10% for most, if not all, of next year and incumbents tend to get blamed for bad economies (even when they were handed a pile of s**t to deal with), so 2010 doesn't look promising.

We can always hope that the repubs overplay a potentially winning hand and destroy themselves with tea baggers, nutjobs at town hall meetings and hyper-conservative candidates.

15. Depends on when the move downward begins
Edited on Sat Nov-21-09 08:34 AM by AllentownJake
If it begins by July and continues till election, the democrats can make the case the Republicans made a really giant fucking mess and they shouldn't be returned to power.

If it doesn't the GOP will make the case the democrats handled the problem wrong.

Either way, the election will be fought in about 60 congressional seats and 10 Senate Races.

CT,PA,AR,NV,FL,MO,CO,OH,NC,DE Of those races there are 6 democrats and 4 republicans.

States like NY,WA,ND, AZ,LA, and SD could possibly become competitive as the year goes on. 3 democrats and 3 republicans.

The rest of the Senate Races aren't going to be real competitive. I don't see Republicans beating Russ Feignold and I don't see us beating Richard Shelby.

We are playing some defense next year.

17. I want to see them steamrolled into the tarmac...
completely destroyed, tossed into the cold and w/o any kind of hope...nothing but despair and gnashing of teeth.

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why D's don't treat them like the trash they are, they had no notion of bi-partisanship when they had power, why concede anything to the party that drove this nation into the ground?

Passing any form of HCR and job creation, even on a somewhat limited scale would send them into a tailspin they could never recover from...complete destruction, the path of the Whigs is what I want...:woohoo:

20. In 3/2000 We Failed to Crush GWB Like a Cockroach
because DLC decided "oh he's a lightweight, he is not worth the effort to out his cocaine conviction and stock swindling".
The tragic consequences of that decision not to act are innumerable and in many cases irreparable.
The GOP has already done half the job for us, a little help is all they need.

23. Welcome to DU...
bush was absolutely the worst president this nation has ever seen. If there is one thing to be thankful for, it is that he mangled the GOP to such an extent, they can be crushed into oblivion, complete w/the insane neo-con movement. I don't underestimate the creeps at all...that's why I call for pressure on all fronts. They've dug their own grave...now it's time to shove them into it.

19. Unfortunately, we're probably the ones that'll get crushed
Due to the Dems en masse acting like Republicans and making everything worse.

I hope I'm wrong, I really do, but if this is the status quo for the next year, we're ker-fucked.
