US envoy criticizes coverage of Obama China visit
US envoy criticizes coverage of Obama China visit

By CHRISTOPHER BODEEN
Associated Press Writer

BEIJING (AP) -- Washington's ambassador to Beijing hit out Friday at negative U.S. media coverage of President Barack Obama's visit to China, saying it failed to take into account important progress on many issues.

Although producing no breakthroughs on key issues, Obama's first state visit to the Asian giant that ended Wednesday was heralded by both sides as a success.

The trip was the top news story in China, drawing strong interest from the Chinese public who, surveys suggest, are largely positive in their view of the American president.

However, much of the U.S. media coverage was strongly negative, accusing Obama of failing to gain concessions on key issues such as Iran's nuclear program and climate change, as well as being weak on human rights.

Ambassador Jon Huntsman said the reports missed the fact that the visit had yielded important progress on cooperation in areas such as clean energy, military-to-military exchanges and stopping the spread of nuclear weapons.

"I attended all those meetings that President Obama had with Hu Jintao and Wen Jiabao," Huntsman said, referring to the Chinese president and premier.

"I've got to say some of the reporting I saw afterward was off the mark. I saw sweeping comments about things that apparently weren't talked about, when they were discussed in great detail in the meetings," he said.

1. Heavyweights who really "Understand" what the President's visit meant
in terms of our relations to China have had nothing but positive things to say about this trip.

Our media is dangerous. They don't give a shit about anything if Quitter Palin ain't involved....
and so since she couldn't see China from her house.....guess that was bad for our President.

I'm hating the media more and more everyday. I don't even watch those cable assholes anymore, cause there are only but a very few who are even likable at this point. In fact, I count 2.

3. I agree, Frenchie.
The media barely covered his trip, except to criticize it---and of course they covered the "bow". The American public was given a steady diet of "all Palin, all the time" and only the most negative spin when they did manage to say a couple of words about President Obama's trip.

Media bias is clear, and it was obvious by their meager but negative coverage of his last two trips, that they can't wait for him to fail and want to push that theme as hard as they can-- just like Rush.

I noticed that a posted video of President Obama at the Alaska Air Force Base was clipped by Politico so as NOT to show any of the wild cheering of the troops for their CIC. They clipped it so all you would see were non-smiling soldiers while the Pres was speaking. I saw the whole thing elsewhere, and the soldiers were cheering and smiling a LOT---but you would not have known it by the Politico clip. They are not fooling me as to their agenda. This is just one of so many glaringly obvious attempts to "bring him down".

Another example is that they only report the lowest of poll numbers; but fail to report the ones that continually show our President in a good light.

Finally, It seems no one cares about not criticizing the President while he is across the ocean anymore. That courtesy was only for Bush, I guess.

2. Isn't it ironic that a Republican has President Obama's back?
While so many here on DU, and other so-called "progressive" sites keep trashing him every chance they get.

Just one of President Obama's smart moves was picking Huntsman for Ambassador to China. Apparently, an honest man--and a Republican. Wow, I guess there are a couple still around.

5. True Journalism has been dying in this nation for decades...
it is all about the "grab factor", what comes out that will grab attention; apparently few things other than negatives are seen as "grabbers".

It's as if there is a horror that suddenly Peace will break out and destroy everything...:eyes:

11. I found out the hard way..
I got started in politics in 2000 and had no clue that the "media" was bought and paid for until they started excoriating Al Gore(the first presidential candidate I donated and paid attention to).

I was heartbroken..I still didn't quite get it when I thought they would investigate bush when the coup got him in. I found out in a real hurry.

So nothing's changed in 9 years except we now have KO, Rachel, and a very few others (including a brilliant man on Comedy Central who uses humor to get us the news) who can at least get some facts out while the rest of them are manufacturing and manipulating for their corporate masters.

The White House knows this and won in spite of the US mediawhores..and anything they do to confront faux or call out the media can only work towards making this a better country.

but it will take hard work to get away from "pundits", basiucally, they must be tuned out so they no longer are a source of income, but rather, a liability.

I remember Huntley & Brinkley, Cronkite and a host of others who took their work seriously. They brought honest news into our homes, even if we didn't like to hear it...at least we got facts. Today, we get cheap opinions that are n a par w/the drunk at the bar who hasn't voted since Eisenhower...:(

17. I remember Murrow as well...
and his reports from London during the Blitz should be heard by everyone. Standing at ground zero, on a roof, his descriptions are hypnotizing.

When he took on McCarthy and that group of thugs, he was one of the very few who had the guts to call McCarthy a liar and a fool.

Comparing Journalism to "Fox & Friends" is so ridiculous, I shudder to think of those who listen to that tripe and really think it's news...Ducey and that other bonehead are painfully stupid...:eyes:
