Obama Has a Job for Dana Perino. Really.
November 19, 2009

Obama Has a Job for Dana Perino. Really.

By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG

From the Department of Unlikely Events: George W. Bush’s press secretary has been asked to serve in the Obama administration.

Well, sort of.

Dana M. Perino, Mr. Bush’s fourth and final press secretary, was nominated Thursday by President Obama to serve on the Broadcasting Board of Governors, an independent agency responsible for overseeing the Voice of America, Radio Free Europe and other non-military broadcasts sponsored by the federal government.

Mr. Obama is required to make the board nonpartisan; by law, it must consist of no more than four members of the same political party. Ms. Perino was on a list of eight nominees; Mr. Obama also selected Walter Isaacson, the author and former chairman of CNN, to serve as the board chairman. The others are: Victor H. Ashe; Michael Lynton; Susan McCue; Michael P. Meehan; Dennis Mulhaupt and S. Enders Wimbush.

All must be confirmed by the Senate.

Wonder if the hearings will be televised?

14. Excuse Machine goes into action!
OK, but why this obviously partisan, small-minded, talking head hack?

Surely there are Republicans with backgrounds in this area who are more honest, mature, and responsible an thoughtful than this empty shill...

And anyway, what's the rush?

The pukes have blocked almost all of the President's judicial appointments for months.

Wait until that gets cleared up, THEN maybe find a relatively decent puke for a post like this.

15. What excuses?
He is required to put rethugs on the board. The ones with that kind of background are all pretty much empty shills. Can you think of any that aren't? I can't. I suspect this is probably just a counter to their whining about how "You people blame Bush for EVERYTHING!" They all have to be confirmed by the Senate anyway.

Perino sucks, I am pretty sure of that.

As I read it, that doesn't entitle the Republicans, or any party, to any slots. Obama could pick St. Ralph and three people from minor socialist parties (or registered independents) if he wanted (though I might want to give one place to a member of the Natural Law Party, just 'cause they's so wacky).

Seriously, I don't see why, with so much on his plate, Obama would needlessly seek yet another confrontation with the GOP by refusing to nominate Republicans to this board, and Perino's sufficiently prominent, and not a hatchet-woman or hatemonger--seems more like someone who does the party thing because it's her job.

You are correct, though, about not seeking a confrontation with the GOP on this matter. On a nine member board, it just doesn't make that much difference.
