Frustrated liberals voice discontent with Obama
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/politics/story/80980.html

By Margaret Talev and David Lightman | McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON — On health care, the war in Afghanistan, civil liberties and the economy, President Barack Obama is meeting growing resistance from the very group that propelled his election last year: liberal Democrats.

Their most pressing concern is the health care legislation now before the Senate, a package that lacks the government-run insurance plan, or public option, that liberals badly wanted.

1. I know I will start a flame fest but here goes--
Yes, Democrats are upset with Obama. After all he owes his position as president to US. But let's look further. I am glad as all get out (Southern expression) that he is my president. He inherited so many darn messes from the Bushies he is having to do a juggling act every day. And has been since Jan. of this year. We all want him to get another surplus. We want him to put everyone out of work to work again. We want him to get us out of the illegal wars in Iraq and Afghanistan IMMEDIATELY! Never mind logistically it would require months and months to do it. As far as health care goes he simply hasn't done exactly what we want him to do. We listen to some idiot like David Gregory or Georgie Stepchild or that Morning Joe, etc. and it becomes a headline on the news. Next thing there are variations on those themes and we take it for gospel. If he doesn't do all the RIGHT things some will not vote for him if he runs again. Now THAT is a bummer. No, he hasn't done everything I want but I am willing to give him more time--a lot of time to get rid of the stranglehold the Bushies had on this country. It won't happen today, tomorrow or maybe even a year but I am more than willing to give him a chance. He is the best person for the job. Give him some slack.

4. They're not talking about Obama's base, they're talking about LIBERALS
Many of us have had a whole heap o' problems with him from the first. Obama's base is not the liberals and lefties; they largely supported different candidates in the primaries, ones who were more to the left. Sure, many supported him even then out of pragmatism, but they aren't the core stalwarts and never have been. Don't mistake the dewy-eyed young voters who convinced themselves there was a cause where there was basically only vague sweetness-and-light and a personality cult.

6. I disagree... a lot of us liberals (or progressives, or leftists, as you prefer) were for Obama
from the start. Those of us who were for him from the start, who voted for him in the primary, consider ourselves to be both liberals (leftists even) and the base.

Finding that we're not only not going to be paid any attention to as far as our interests go... and that we're now no longer entitled to status as the "base'... well... the Democratic party still complains about those (of us) who voted for Nader in '00... so the response is to tell the leftists that we're not relevant? Y'all self righteous centrists might want to re-consider this track of thought...
