Obama campaign has a small donor "pace that is even higher than his 2008 campaign"
Center for Responsive Politics

HAS OBAMA LOST HIS SMALL-DOLLAR DONOR GROOVE?: As President Barack Obama shifts his re-election campaign into high gear, some people are wondering if he still has his small-dollar donor magic, according to a report in the New York Times.

<...>

Individuals that contributed $200 or less to Obama during the 2008 race accounted for about one-third of Obama's record $745 million haul, according to research by the Center for Responsive Politics. The total helped ignite enthusiasm for his campaign, and ultimately helped sweep him into office.

But despite the enthusiasm gap noted by the Times, all does not seem to be lost for Obama regarding small-dollar donors: Through the end of June, Obama raised nearly half of his campaign funds from small-dollar donors, as OpenSecrets Blog previously reported. As of June 30, Obama's presidential campaign reported collecting about $46.3 million and about $21.65 million of that came from donors who contributed $200 or less. That's a pace that is even higher than his 2008 campaign, meaning for every disillusioned individual who gave Obama money in 2008 who hasn't donated to his re-election effort, the campaign has tapped new supporters who are willing to open their wallets for the president.

5. I'm A Small Donor, I'm Exasperated With Obama, Too, BUT
I'm a small political donor. I'm exasperated with President Obama, too, BUT I see a Tea-publican Presidency as being an even bigger disaster for the US than the eight years of Gee Dubya Bush. So I'll kick in later, but I am NOT a happy camper.

14. When you're comparing September 2011 Obama fundraising
with September Obama 2007 fundraising, you're talking apples and oranges. Let's compare the post-Iowa timeframes to really see what's going on. Before that, I'm sure a lot of people didn't think he could get the nomination.

20. Where do you see a Sept '07 - Sept '11 comparison?
The article in the OP makes no such comparison. It compares the percentage figures for the first and second quarters of this year -- in other words, through June -- to the percentage figures for the 2008 election campaign in its entirety.

There's nothing in there concerning September from any year whatsoever.

just so they can feel like Obama is doing badly.

23. But the NYT talked to a dozen or so folks who gave and now are not so sure

and ran a big article about how Obama's base is deserting him.

That article confirmed the crowd opinion at DU and received plenty of recs.

So who are we to believe? Facts or anecdotal stories that confirm what we want to believe?

24. Good to know there are still mostly dems and independents...
Who have good sense and know what's best for us all. They know Obama's job has been huge and near impossible but he has accomplished a lot. He never promised to make our wildest dreams come true...that was Pedro!

Problem is that the big ego "know it alls" are SO LOUD!!! Good news is that these people are usually all talk and no money anyway!

25. If you get a chance to catch Diane Rehm's interview with John Lithgow, please do.
When asked about politics, he lamented that while he follows politics very closely, it's not in his nature to speak publicly about politics. He confirmed to Diane that he is a Democrat, who supported the president in '08, and nothing has happened to change that support.

Of course he expressed his disappointment with the GOP, but he also commented that he was surprised at the level of discourse on the left, mostly aimed at Pres. Obama, and how many seem to work overtime to diminish any accomplishments by this administration. His larger point was that as uncharacteristic as it is for someone like him, he now finds it incumbent upon himself, and others like him to support this president publicly, lest we all be consumed by the negativity.

I think the voices of sanity & reason will successfully drown out the noise before it's too late, and those of us who don't have a public platform, certainly have the power of the purse. :hi:

30. It's not Fall 2012 yet. OFA had more donors contributing by June 30, 2011 (Q2) than all of 2007.

Stop comparing apples to oranges. It's ludicrous and misleading to do so.

29. Make those numbers higher by tomorrow night (Sept. 30, end of quarter)
Give $10 or $15 just to get some skin in the game. It's not the amount but the numbers of donors.

I think a lot of people just think it is too early to bother. They'll ramp up next spring after a Republican nominee has locked in the nomination, and many not until late summer/early fall, when the election gears up for good.
