1. The media knows that the current crop of wannabes
is pretty lacking in almost all categories, most of all electability at either the primary or general level.

Romney and Huntsman probably could get elected President in the right circumstances but their chances of pulling out a strong endorsement from the rank and file pukes are pretty slim.

The rest of the field, Perry, Bachmann, Paul, Cain etc. can probably do pretty well with the primary but they would stand a pretty poor chance of knocking off even a weakened Barack Obama.

Christie is just the latest "great white hope" in that they are hoping he can save the GOP and bring a needed bit of excitement to what has honestly become a pretty boring Primary.

All of course IMHO, I could simply be nuts.

3. I agree on your theory
The GOP doesn't have a hot prospect and Herman won in Florida! Meanwhile Obama is warming up nicely. Maybe they need to give away billions of free pizzas to activate some enthusiasm.

6. What is strange is that I remember that the media spoke of how the

most important thing is that a candidate has to be someone you would want to have a beer with - and decided that was a fatal flaw for two interesting, nice human guys who ran in 2000 and 2004.

In Christie you have a rude bully. In my very Republican county, at a town hall, Christie when asked a polite question from a teacher, who later self identified himself as Republican rather than just answering the question, he demanded the man come on stage. When the man demurred, he order two NJ policemen to escort him to the stage and then berated him. This is not normal - or acceptable behavior. I imagine it might place even less well in the midwest where I came from.

So, why he might be "great" (in size) and "white", he should not give the Republicans hope.

9. That is exactly why I think he'd fail right now
the media and repuke moneybags are all trying their damndest to lionize Christie as a fantastic prospect. I agree that once you get past his rather well polished image to date he's nothing more than an average bully.

The same thing happened with Perry, he came in late and all we heard was "whew, finally we have our conservative voice in the race" now he's falling apart because of a bunch of self-inflicted wounds that show him to be an intellectual lightweight.

I'm surprised the guy allowed himself to be berated by that blowhard. At the very least I'd like to think that I'd call him a few choice epithets while I was up on stage with him. That is however easy to say while not in the glare of the lights but I'd sure hope that I'd be able to make myself heard.

there was no obnoxiousness from his side. Also the context is that this is a Republican area and the teacher, as a productive member of the community, likely has never had an authority figure treat him like this. I think this likely shocked many there.

I am not sure if he could benefit from charm school - he just is a pretty nasty guy. The media could hide GWB's mean side, but he could have a genial demeanor. I don't know if Christie can appear nice.

10. More seriously, he has NOT brought economic success to NJ
I decided to try to compare the trend in unemployment in NJ and similar states a few months ago.

NJ is an affluent state with an abundance of jobs in R&D and in Finance. It is also a state where high school kids are among the top performing in the country. It also has a significant number of older urban centers that were once successful cities. Another state that could be described similarly is MA.

Since Governor Christie was elected in 2009, you can think of these two states as if they were testing the republican and the Democratic economic solutions. From two sources, here are the unemployment rates.

December 2009 (a month after Christie was elected - as a baseline): NJ - 10.0 MA - 9.3
December 2010 : : NJ - 9.1 MA - 8.2 (The budget for 2010 was passed in 2009 by Corzine)
So, you see NJ and MA moving in the same direction with MA slightly better off.

Then -
May 2011: : NJ- 9.4 MA - 7.6
NJ is WORSE, while MA is continuing to get better. (The August 2011 numbers are NJ at 9.4 and MA at 7.4 )

If you look at NY, also run by a Democratic governor, the results look like MA's. What is clear is that the cuts that Christie forced through have hurt the state of NJ.

Here are the two links:

For the 2009 and 2010 data - http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/01/25/unemployment-rates-state-glance

For the 2011 data: - http://www.ncsl.org/?tabid=13308

(Both are simply releases of the same government data.)

Given the similarities between the states, with the only difference being the policies pushed by the respective Governors, this is not good for Christie.

15. I'm guessing there's plenty of condemning video out there should he
chose to run. Plus, that little blow up he had when he railed about the teaparty folks being anti-science.

2. If he were nominated he be the largest nominee since Taft.
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 01:11 PM by WI_DEM
but seriously, the msm is going overtime trying to make sure Perry isn't the nominee because he is so vulnerable on so many counts. They are trying to prop up Romney and they keep trying to push Christie to get in the race.

4. If Christie ran AND the GOP gave out free pizza everywhere
they'd get somewhere. Can you imagine Christie being a role model with the health issues we have due to obesity in the US? heh

5. The media has it's marching orders, as they always do.....
when you see a lot of the same things being said all over,
it is because the producers have come in with the script.
That's how it works. There is no independent news network on
television except for Current and Democracy Now....everything
else is hooked to the fax that received the GOP talking points
from above.

14. A family member swears that Andrea is a progressive...
... I think some of them look a bit sick spouting the points but it's been clear all day they've been told to pump this story.

The excuse used is that "as journalists we have to watch his moves" bs.

7. A very savvy and connected Repub friend of mine says that the
word is Christie, in his heart of hearts, does not think any repub can beat Obama, he would rather wait until 2016. The other word is that his wife is adamantly against it and his brother, also an important adviser to Christie is also against his running at this time. Christie, of course, is not going to come out and publicly say why he won't run but that's the word in Jersey. Obama probably cannot lose with the panel of clowns presently vying for his job.

13. Plus, he'll have to work on his health, he's clearly not in shape
and that's a concern just as it is when a candidate is too old (McCain) for office.

fucking hilarious and very predictable. Give this asshole some scrutiny and he will fall harder than Perry and with a hell of a bigger thud.
