CNN Poll: Perry still leads GOP field nationally
Despite shaky recent debate performances, a new CNN/Opinion Research survey finds Rick Perry remains on top of the field in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Perry leads with 30%, followed by Mitt Romney at 22%, Newt Gingrich at 11%, Herman Cain at 9%, Ron Paul at 7%, Michele Bachmann at 6%, Rick Santorum at 3% and Jon Huntsman at 1%.

However, the survey indicates that Romney fares best against President Obama, trailing by just one point, 49% to 48%. Obama holds a five point lead over Perry, 51% to 46%.

2. I REALLY hope he remains in the lead and wins the nomination. Nothing would make me happier (unless
he were to pick Palin as his VP which I highly doubt).

Besides, I don't think the effect of either Perry's last debate performance, or Cain's cockamamie Florida win could have affected this poll much. SNL did a really, really good rip on Perry the other night, and it's just being talked about at the water coolers today.

The Rethugs haven't got any more debates for a couple of weeks, there will few opportunities for Perry to repair his image until then.

4. finally something teabaggers and Dems can agree on..We all want Rick Perry to be the GOP nominee
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 02:35 PM by Douglas Carpenter
Although I do so with a bit of fear and trembling. Given the reality of how the economy will probably be doing in Oct/Nov 2011 it would be difficult for any incumbent president to win reelection regardless what policies they are supporting. Rick Perry offers the best possible opportunity to break the normal historic pattern. But I shudder at the thought, "what if he were to win?"

6. They got nothing
Goes to show you how empty their choices are. Perry is an idiot of the highest order. Worse empty suit ever. Lets hope they really pick this idiot to be their candidate.

8. Romney is too intellectual for teabaggers
Perry appeals to them as the big macho dunce. They don't want a president who is smarter than they are. Not hard to achieve.

9. Rumors of Perry's demise are greatly exaggerated IMHO
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 03:50 PM by Proud Liberal Dem
One bad debate isn't going to be enough to ruin his chances and I imagine that he'll be rehabilitated in the next debate. Although, based on what I've seen of him so far, Romney is proving to be a more aggressive candidate and I think that Perry might have underestimated him.

10. WTF Obama only 5 pts o Perry? If he wins and stands next to
Obama in a debate, surely, surely, surely that lead would
expand to 50 pts. He's a moran!

11. Carter sounded a lot, lot smarter than Reagan in their one and only debate
But during a time of economic decline people were more interested in listening to a flim-flam man than someone sensible.

15. Yeah but Reagan had a certain charm and didn't talk down to people.
Perry has the charm of a rattlesnake and lectures audiences. That will begin to wear on voters over time.

13. Poll conducted fri-sun. I doubt this reflects all the fallout from Perry's Thurs disaster.
Check it again later this week and I suspect Mittens will take the lead.
