New Poll: Perry surges in FL vs. Romney
Edited on Thu Sep-22-11 01:41 PM by WI_DEM
Quinnipiac University. 9/14-19. Florida Republicans. MoE ±5.1% (7/27-8/2 results):

(this is how I see it playing out: Perry takes Iowa, concedes NH to Mittens. Wins South Carolina and then goes for the knock-out in Florida):

Perry: 31 (14)
Romney: 22 (24)
DK/NA: 13 (19)
Cain: 8 (9)
Gingrich: 8 (5)
Bachmann: 7 (7)
Paul: 6 (10)
Huntsman: 2 (1)
Santorum: 2 (1)
Someone else (VOL): 1 (3)
Wouldn't vote (VOL): 1 (3)
McCotter: - (-)
Pawlenty: na (3)

The Republican primary is still looking like a contest between Rick Perry and Mitt Romney: the GOP's top two candidates are the only ones in double-digits in Quinnipiac's latest survey of Republicans, with Perry ahead of Romney by nine points and Romney leading every other candidate by at least 14 points.

Here is another reason why I hope the nominee is Perry:

Romney leads Obama in a hypothetical matchup by a 47% to 40% margin, a huge shift from before the debt deal when Obama lead Romney by a 46%-41% margin. Obama narrowly leads Rick Perry by a 44%-42% margin, though that is also down from a 49%-36% lead before the debt deal.

1. I'm torn
I think Perry would be easier to beat and the man is a lunatic but Romney would be much more likely to draw a teabagging third party candidate (the hard right HATES Romney). Whoever it is, I hope these two take it all the way to the convention and beat the shit out of eachother until then.

2. Third party candidates are almost always irrelevant
The right will unite around Romney if they have to. They did around McCain, after all.

5. Precisely why
they are saying they wont do it again. They think McCain wasn't conservative enough. Those baggers are hungry and we saw with the two twits in NV and DE that they are willing to throw a sure fire winner under the bus for purity.

6. SS controversy will eventually sink Perry in Florida. He did call it a "Ponzi scheme"
He can blather all he wants about how he wasn't talking about current retirees - but people are smart enough to know that this kind of loose talk can reduce confidence in SS which is a bad thing for everybody.
This will catch up with him by Florida primary time imo.
