Jimmy Carter wants Mitt Romney to be the Republican nominee
Edited on Sat Sep-17-11 01:03 AM by ClarkUSA
Former President Jimmy Carter wants to see Mitt Romney win the Republican nomination and run against President Obama next November.

"I hope he wins," Carter said of the former Massachusetts governor in a Thursday night interview with MSNBC. "I'm not taking a position, but I would be very pleased to see him win the Republican nomination."

Carter, a Democrat, added that he thinks Romney would lose in a match up against Obama, and that he supports the president's re-election.

Heh... I'll bet Perry can't wait to zing Romney over this ringing endorsement during the next Republican debate. ;)

4. This sort of reminds me of the period towards the end of the 2008 election,
when Dick Cheney publicly endorsed John McCain for POTUS. Reportedly, Republican insiders were convinced that Cheney did it because he hated McCain's guts, and thought that a public endorsement was the biggest "f**k you" that he could possibly give him.

He was probably right.

5. Carter & Co. wanted Reagan in 1980
They got him. Unfortunately, so did the rest of us.

12. The one where I'm closing in on 50
Reagan was "extreme" and "unelectable" in the early months of 1980: Howard Baker was the most feared Republican from the viewpoint of the Carter campaign.

20. Yes, you're undoubtedly right.
I certainly know I was of that opinion back then.

And it cured me of wanting the craziest, most obviously incompetent & ludicrous available candidate as our opponent.

13. He Wanted Reagan As An Opponent Because He Thought He Would Be The Easiest Pub To Beat
"More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones."

Any sane Dem wants to run against Perry. Because if it's Perry there is a chance the election a referendum on him. If it's about Romney the election will be a referendum on the economy and the state of the nation.

21. Yes, the Carter people wanted to run against Reagan.
Unfortunately, they were betting on the sanity & good judgment of the public, and these turned out to be mythical entities.

6. The takeaway here IMO
is that JC could live with MR as POTUS but is scared to death of what a RP win would lead to for the country.

9. Agreed. And I feel the same way. I suspect Obama will lose and/or
get done in by electronic ballot boxes, and if we have to have another pub, Romney is the least harmful choice.

14. Gee so retired Democratic Presidents who
endorse GOPers can be doing so to get them in trouble with the GOP base, no wait only Carter can I bet if Clinton did this you would have a whole different spin on this.

Carter, being a fellow Southerner and an outspoken critic of the Tea Party, knows exactly what Perry is all about and reads polls as well as anyone.

18. Definitely. This will drive the GOP base even farther into the Perry camp, which is a good thing.

The Republican establishment, which has always made Carter's name a political epithet, just got it shoved down their Romney-loving throats. I hope President Carter keeps it up.
