Finally shamed? Rumsfeld cancels NY Times subscription over Krugman blog post

by Armando

So a once known unknown, whether Donald Rumsfeld had any shame at all, is now a known known—he doesn't. Get this, Rummy is canceling his subscription to the New York Times because Paul Krugman said:

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. <. . .> The memory of 9/11 has been irrevocably poisoned; it has become an occasion for shame. And in its heart, the nation knows it.

That was too much for Rummy. When the Times published that:

A federal judge has agreed to allow an Army veteran who says he was tortured during a nine-month imprisonment in Iraq to sue former Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

Rummy was okay with the Times on that. He is not ashamed of his torture regime.

more

Krugman has a follow-up post:

<...>

It was a time when tough talk was confused with real heroism, when people who made speeches, then feathered their own political or financial nests, were exalted along with – and sometimes above – those who put their lives on the line, both on the evil day and after.

So it was a shameful episode in our nation’s history – and it’s one that I can’t help thinking about whenever we talk about 9/11 itself.

2. Well, bless Krugman for writing that
An act of heroism in and of itself, especially in the face of all that contrived, 10th anniversary reverence.

3. THIS....is why I tuned out yesterday totally.
"when people who made speeches, then feathered their own political or financial nests, were exalted along with – and sometimes above – those who put their lives on the line, both on the evil day and after."

Yesterday, the energy here in town was strange.
Sundays in my little Southern town are usually quite, but yesterday was ....hushed.
It felt, all day, like a sad holiday.
Even in the afternoon I heard very little traffic, saw no one outside, on an otherwise glorious fall day. Heard no yard work going on ( normally I would expect to on a day like yesterday).
Not having a tv,I did not have to put with what passes for news on the main channels,
so was able to avoid the hoopla of the politicians.
Everything I needed to know about this 10th anniversary was very evident when I read some weeks back that first responders would not be allowed to attend.
and that Bush would.
