Stewart rips media over "Speechgate"
http://news.yahoo.com/stewart-rips-media-over-speechgate-162411446.html

"Playing clips in which talking heads said Obama had caved to Republicans, Stewart offered another possibility: He had made a reasonable accommodation. But conflict-hungry reporters could never accept such a thing, he said.

"See, this is why I hate the 24-hour news cycle. Well, among the reasons," Stewart said. "They've turned our Tale of Reasonable Accommodation into a Tale of Manufactured Conflict."

He noted that in a White House press conference following the decision, "there were 23 questions about the scheduling of the speech. Nine about its content."

3. It's not so much the Speech Scheduling as it is a Pattern of Weakness
Edited on Wed Sep-07-11 03:15 PM by vroomvroom
For me, i didnt mind the speech rescheduling at all i did notice those who were frustrated with Obama for past weaknesses just came to a boil with this thing. If Obama had showed strength more consistently in his presidential tenure then an issue as trivial as this speech thing would not have been talked about at all.

I have been harsh on Obama for some time on DU but i have given him a pass on speechgate for the very reasons Stewart gives but i can understand the frustrations by others on the left because it shows a consistent bowing by Obama to anything that republicans want...no matter how small.

The media is just being the media and jumping into a frenzy at any kind of controversy...that is typical. They want a horse race and so for them this weakness meme may just what they needed and unfortunately is what republicans are now embracing simply because it is the only issue the Left have been frustrated by Obama with...if republicans keep playing this up and hence, the media sucking it up then my thinking is the Left will continue to be reminded of Obama's weakness and may not show up to vote.

I'll be honest, i am not happy to re-elect Obama and genuinely wish there was a descent primary challenger but since there isn't i am going ot hold my nose and vote for him. But i will be honest, if it was Ron Paul or Obama i would hestiate a little and think....at least with Paul he is "honest" and although several of his views are crazy, some are views that are way left of Obama and seeing that is the case at least i know what i will be getting.

5. Yes, the pattern of weakness was the issue for me as well
not the substance of this manufactured conflict.

Peace,
