Quelle Surprise: GOP will oppose new spending on jobs from Obama
Sen. Sessions: GOP will oppose new spending on jobs from Obama
By Pete Kasperowicz - 09/07/11 11:28 AM ET

Senate Budget Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) on Wednesday signaled that Republicans would oppose the jobs plan President Obama is expected to announce Thursday, saying it would only put the United States further in debt at a time when the debt is already weighing on the economy.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the debt that we’ve now incurred is already weakening our economy,” Sessions said on the Senate floor. “It comes to a point that you can’t keep borrowing in a futile attempt to stimulate the economy when the increased debt itself is weakening the economy.”

Sessions read one press report on the Senate floor that said Obama could propose as much as $300 billion in new spending in his Thursday night address to a joint session of Congress. According to that report, Obama is expected to propose extending payroll tax cuts for another year, and extending expiring jobless benefits. Those two measures combined will cost $170 billion.

He may also propose a tax credit for companies to hire unemployed workers, costing $30 billion, and a public works program that is expected to cost at least $50 billion for such items as school construction.

1. I can see that their vacation refreshed them
to continue their rampant obstructionism. I hope that there is a detailed and well-coordinated plan to respond. :banghead: :puke:

4. Why Obama actually thinks he can work with these people is beyond me
bipartisanship and compromise with these folks ain't gonna get it done. It's time to start cracking some skulls.

5. But how? Executive orders?
I think the centrists are finally starting to get to me, cuz I can't figure out how exactly Obama HIMSELF is supposed to fix the mess we're in.

6. Address the nation from the Oval Office or from the Washington Mall
and slam the Republicans for obstruction. Specifically call out the Republicans by name and tear into them, point-by-point, detailing how exactly they are obstructionists and how they are preventing a jobs package from getting through Congress.

8. He's been heading in that direction recently, Cali_D, on the road.
Now he's about to present his program, and henceforth he'll have more substance with which to pound them, as they continue to obstruct actual programs.

The horrible sin is that the repugs have forced us all into this situation, for their own power they ruin the nation.

10. How does that translate into legislation though?
I get that it would edifying for liberals and heartening to those who feel trapped, stuck, hopeless. But how does such a public appearance translate into a viable "big" jobs bill, for instance? So the president informs the public about the unprecedentedly obstructionist ways of the GOP. Then what? I mean, no one in Congress gives a fuck about what the people want...so how do the people get what we want?

11. Then the GOP is on the defensive
They are the ones who have to defend themselves from accusations they're doing nothing about the jobs crisis, not Obama.

The political pressure would be enormous, especially as the economy stagnates and very few jobs are being created. Every new jobs report that shows weak employment numbers will put even more pressure on the GOP as Obama should slam them on a daily basis for being obstructionists.

7. He must appear willing to work with them; he knows how governing should work,
and he must demonstrate this to everyone (including those who don't want to see it/don't understand it.)

He's not forced to act as they are, by compulsive, anti-Obama/Dem obstructionism.

12. What is cracking skulls?
Of what does that consist. Presidents HAVE to work with Congress. That is the nature of the beast.

And Congress HAS to work with the President. I don't see all these posters claiming the Rs caved when they didn't get programs eliminated under a Democratic President.

This unreasonableness is just incredible and continues repetitively.

19. The information about
proposing that someone work for an employer "FOR FREE" is absolutely incorrect. The details are explained several times down the thread. The employer will receive reimbursement of the UI payments for a training period. The employee is NOT "working for free".
