No one asked me, of course. But I think it's a simple mud fight.

The move in speech time thing, I mean.

A guy on NPR this morning put it really well -- it was an unpopular president fighting with an unpopular congress, and on Main Street their opinions of all players was bound to go down. The tide going out lowering all ships, or something. :D

Anyhow, so if national opinion on everyone goes down, it's no biggie for the guy who's got no real competition from the other side on election day: Obama, that is.

Just my opinion, but if you look at a White House that measures their political capital with a micrometer, they probably figured it was a no-brainer to bloody all sides for a few news cycles.

1. Jeez, Robb.
You're beginning to sound more like me than like you.

A comment that I'm sure will not thrill you.

5. I keep seeing this fallacy on DU.
Congress' national popularity means nothing. The president's national popularity means a great deal. He has to win a national election. Boehner or cantor or whoever only has to win a majority of their district. It's an apple to oranges comparison.

6. Harry Truman won by highlighting the do-nothing unpopular Congress.
That's not the ONLY way he won. But that was part of it.

I don't think that the scheduling dance was planned by Obama staff, anyway. I think it was a flub...they seriously don't keep up with what's going on in the world (outside sports), and didn't know about the debate. Or didn't recognize its importance (the majority of the House is Republican; they're ALL going to want to watch that debate, since it's the first big debate, and will have the stars Romney, Bachman, AND the biggest star of all, Perry). Perry is feisty. There are big expectations for the debate. The W.H. should've known that.

But the Republicans lose out, too. It's tacky to ask the Prez to reschedule. All this should've been done behind closed doors.
