GOP raffling off gun in Giffords's district
GOP raffling off gun in Giffords's district
By Cameron Joseph - 09/01/11 09:04 AM ET

The Pima County Republican Party is raffling off a Glock 23 handgun to raise money for get out the vote efforts in the district where a Glock was used last winter to kill six people and wound Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

Arizona has a strong gun culture -- Giffords herself owns a Glock and told the New York Times last year that she was a "pretty good shot." But, in light of the shootings, it's curious why the local GOP decided to risk opening itself up to charges of insensitivity on the issue.

Raffle tickets are on sale this week for $10. The Pima County GOP will conduct the raffle at the first event it has after the 125 tickets are sold out. They did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Of course they care that Giffords was shot.

One of their own, federal judge John Roll was killed the incident.

I disagree with Republicans on a lot of policy issues as do most DUers, but sometimes the jaundiced views stated on this forum of them as people crosses the line into paranoia. I was raised by a Republican mom (now reformed), had a pair of Republican grandparents (now deceased), and have enjoyed the company of many other Republican family members, neighbors, and friends who were or all all fine, decent people. Sure there are some wackos out there, but most Republicans are just people who happen to disagree with our party on issues.

8. Yes, John Roll was a Republican, but not really a favorite
of the current generation of Arizona Republicans.
In 2009, Roll ruled that the case Vicente v. Barnett could go forward. The $32 million lawsuit brought by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) against Arizona rancher Roger Barnett on behalf of 16 Mexican plaintiffs charged that the plaintiffs were assaulted, threatened, and held at gunpoint by Barnett and members of his family. After Roll's ruling and prompted by several talk-radio programs, he was the subject of hundreds of complaining phone calls and death threats and he and his family were under the protection of the U.S. Marshals Service for a month.<9><10><11> Roll declined to press charges when some of those who made threats were identified.<12>

9. We should never discuss the bad behavior of the teabaggers?
They're raffling off a gun because they're crazy teabaggers, not to get the attention of posters on forums. What a ridiculous conclusion.
