NY-09(Anthony Weiner's) Seat is in serious jeopardy
Edited on Thu Sep-01-11 05:27 AM by bigdarryl
Where the fuck do they get these candidates sounds like a possible repeat of Scott Brown stealing a seat from the democrats. Once again the democrats shot themselves in the foot if this seat goes rethug it's the democrats in the house fault because they forced Weiner out thinking the seat was safe. http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/08/gaffes-could-cost-democrats-anthony-weiners-seat.php?ref=fpc

2. I always thought that the reaction to what Weiner did was overblown
compared to some other scandals. His biggest mistake probably was lying about it but it was still rather overblown IMHO and he should've been allowed to hold on to his seat until 2012 and let the voters decide. Odds are, everybody would've forgotten (or cared less) about it. After all, forcing him to resign didn't create any new jobs, put food on anybody's table, nor a roof over anybody's head. :banghead:

4. He was waving his weiner about....and there were PICTURES of it. That's what did him in.
Lying? Hey, if his wife forgives him, what business is it of ours? There wasn't any Spitzer-like contact, it was just sordid and sleazy. And, of course, there were those PICTURES. We heard about Vitter and the diaper, and we heard about toe-tapping Larry Craig...but we didn't see any PICTURES.

Every picture tells a story, don't it?

When there's pictures involved, it's pretty much a slam dunk. Especially when the pics are of the guy's dick!

5. Yeah but if that's the bar that is set for future resignations
then anybody who's taken naughty pictures or done videos and they get out "into the wild" would have to resign. No crimes were committed, which is more than some Republicans can say when they've gotten caught with their pants down.

10. They weren't just the pics
Sending them with a pregnant wife (when he was married this year) made it worse. He still didn't have to resign, as no crimes were committed, but it was the right thing to do IMO.

17. Pretty much that IS the standard. It's pretty difficult to legislate effectively
when there is a photo/video of a politician doing some nasty thing....too much rich opportunity for photoshopping. A video with sound delivers a kiss of death even sooner.

It's one of those things that crosses party lines, pretty much. Vitter only survived because his constituents heard PROSTITUTE but didn't hear DIAPER, and his wife stood by his side in a trampy leopard too-tight, too-low-cut blouse. If there'd been a pic of him with the working girl and the diaper, he'd be toast, even amongst loyal wingnuts.

8. True
it was stupid- not unlike Clinton's escapades while in office. However, Weiner's actions seem kind of pale by comparison. Oh well. Life goes on, right?

21. David Vitter was in 'the public eye' - he's still there.
Joe Walsh is 'in the public eye' - he's still there.

Unlike the above examples, Weiner did NOTHING illegal. But he was a loud-mouth Progressive, so he had to go. Way to go, Dems - throwing your own under the bus once again.

23. I agree, but Weiner did make it worse for himself
I agree that the scandal was way overblown and Weiner should have stayed in office. Politicians have done much worse and gotten away with it (like Vitter who actually broke the law, and tons of other politicians caught basically putting tax payer money in their own pockets of their crony's pockets). This scandal reminds me of that republican who quit like a month into the job after sending shirtless photos to a woman, I thought he overreacted by quitting to, especially so soon.

Still, the moment that Weiner started 'sort of' admitting to it (I forget exactly what he said, something along the lines of "that's not me in those pictures but if it were") he doomed himself and just let the media start stomping all over him.

In my opinion Weiner would have had much better luck covering up the scandal if he had viciously attacked all the media people who were covering it for covering it (and labeling it as a fact to) solely based on the word of Andrew Breitbart, a guy who's slanderous lies the media has been dumb enough to fall for 3 or 4 times in a row, while in the process soiling the good names of innocent people who Andrew Breitbart hated for their political beliefs & positions of power.

Once the scandal was confirmed Weiner probably should have announced that he wouldn't run for reelection but would serve out his term.

9. Supposing the GOP won
They would only hold the seat for about a year before they'd be up for re-election, right? One more vote in the House isn't going to do anything significant for them or anything particularly detrimental to us if we lose the seat. I'm not saying that we shouldn't be concerned about losing but we'll still have an opportunity to win the seat back relatively soon if we do. We'll just need to pick a better candidate. And that's IF we lose in the first place.

12. remember the seat we won in upstate new york
if we lose this seat we will end up losing that one. Two New York seats will be lost in redistricting and the control of redistricting is divided so each party will have to give up one seat. Normally that would mean the GOP loses an upstate seat and the city loses a Democratic one. If we lose Wiener's former seat then they will likely flip the scenario.

13. Weiner's district is the second most conservative in NYC
(aside from the 13th, in Staten Island and part of Brooklyn). That's of course relative, given that this is New York. But the 9th District gave Obama only 55% of its vote in 2008. (Compare that to surrounding districts, where Obama got between 63% and 91% of the vote.)

Statistics from Nate Silver, who further discusses the redistricting issue regarding Weiner's old district, which may happen.

14. Why doesnt Weiner run for the Seat again? An old Poll showed he would win
Unless a new poll has come out ot show otherwise it would be dandy for Weiner to just run for the same seat. I am sure he will be smeared by the acts but there is a good chance a lot of people would come out to vote because of his tenacious fighting spirit against repubz.

Of course, i know Anthony may not be up for it but one can hope. I'd love to see him mayor too.

19. New Poll
Edited on Sat Sep-03-11 07:19 PM by caber09
How come noone has mentioned the new poll that says Weprin is up by 8, and when they list out the issues his lead expands to 23%...he has also vastly out raised Turner in NY 09, Turner had to loan his campaign money to stay afloat in Aug, a month he supposedly soared to tighten the race. Latest poll has Weprin by 8, only R internal poll had it a tie. I just moved from this district, my dad still lives there, I cant see how they would vote for a R, but if the media hypes it up, it tends to make people go with the "momentum". Hopefully Weprin wins.

PS I also cant see how a district would vote 65% for Weiner after his issues, and after another year it would prob be closer to 70% by the election...would turn around and vote for an R vs a clean D.

20. If a Dem wins, I hope they select one who's not a perve. That jerk...
with his perverted issues, has cost the Democrats a lot in that area, by making the election a toss-up instead of the sure thing it shoulda coulda been.

22. HYPED REPORT ! SCARE BS OP. First, the LATEST poll has Weprin UP by 8%. Next,
NO, Weprin is NOT "stupid". He should have had some of his facts better together, but he is not "stupid." Who knows, could have just been a bad moment and a "brain cramp." Can happen to anyone. It is a pretty blue area, and he is doing the right things by going on offense against this asshole RePUKE, and he has plenty of cash and union support. It is almost ALWAYS about GOTV in these special elections, and if his ground machine is in good order, he WINS. So CHILL THE HELL OUT. Thanks.
