13. Ummm, that building belongs to the Episcopalians, and as far
as I know, they aren't hypocrites. Now, if it was my faiths's Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception that was damaged, then your comment would make sense.

BTW - the Episcopalians make a serious effort to welcome people of all faiths to the National Cathedral.

25. exactly
The National Cathedral of St Peter and St Paul is an Episcopal Cathedral and generally Episcopalians are liberal It's also a beautiful structure that took nearly a century to complete. I went to the affiliated National Cathedral School for Girls in the 1960s and early 70s right after LBJ passed the Civil Rights Act. And I will always treasure the time spent, especially Friday morning chapel, in the Cathedral before its completion. As a work of art, it is a wonder.

Godspeed to my friends there, and I hope that there is not more, deeply seated structural damage.

2. Our county has so relatively few historical buildings (duh,
gateley, because we're relatively young :eyes:) that it's sad when one is damaged or we lose one. :(

I know Europe has lost lots due to quakes, wars, but they've had THOUSANDS of years to replace them! Plus, they don't mow down "old" 50 year old buildings, either to make way for development.

I hope the damage is reparable.

10. "You tear your history down, man."
"I saw something in a program on something in Miami, and they were saying, 'We've redecorated this building to how it looked over 50 years ago!' And people were going, 'No, surely not, no. No one was alive then!'"

:D

12. Ha! I worked at an historic theater in Seattle (the Paramount
for any of you who live here), and the new owner was going to close it down and "refurbish" it. We were heartbroken because it was so old - it was built in the 1920's! We were whining like it was the Coliseum or something -- but that's how old it seemed to us! She did a beautiful job, by the way.

16. I take it she refurbished instead of remodeled?
You just can't get those great old architectural designs anymore!

I recently helped a colleague find new office space in San Francisco, and I was really drawn toward the old buildings, like The Russ Building... awesome, gothic! We ended up getting into a more modern building, but you can see the architectural details of the old buildings across the street through the office windows! So killer... love it!

20. Yeah, she did an incredible job. Had true artisans in to
try to restore or reproduce its original glory. It's amazing how much attention to detail they used to have, and she recreated it beautifully. Here are some "afters" - Dial-up warning :7

14. You must be thinking of a different building

Under construction for 83 years, the Cathedral represents the vision of five esteemed architects and the effort of thousands of masons, sculptors, and other workers.
Architectural FAQs

What is the Cathedral made of?

The principal building material of the Cathedral is Indiana limestone, chosen because it is superior for both construction and carving.

How is the Cathedral structured?

The Cathedral is a solid masonry structure. The limestone blocks are laid one on top of the other, with mortar between them. The flying buttresses are also solid stone, and they help hold up the walls by bracing them. The roof is held up by a steel beam structure, but does not help hold up the rest of the Cathedral. If you removed the roof and booms, the Cathedral would stay standing.
Construction Dates

September 29, 1907, to September 29, 1990

17. Only one of the tips. The Cathedral will be repaired.
I was at work when this happened. We all evacuated, and even the METRO is almost back to normal. There was little or no damage caused from the earthquake. Some broken glass in the Smithsonian; damage to the Cathedral that will be repaired. Other than that, absolutely nothing! It is a gorgeous day! People are out on the Mall, running and walking and enjoying Happy Hour. Even the Nationals will carry on tonight and play baseball.
