My "gut" woke me up this morning after a late night on DU reading
the results coming in from WI. Yes, it was a late night. My "gut" woke me up from that naive confidence I had that the re-election of President Obama would be somewhat of a cakewalk. I had based a lot of that watching the presentation of potential candidates on the right. Good lord, these people on the right are a joke, he will win in a landslide. HA! Better re-think that one girl, so the gut said.

I'm basing this on the ferocity of the right to make Obama a one-term President come hell or high water. They will do whatever it takes (insert cheating, buying votes, tamper with voting machines, etc.) and with plenty of money (Koch brothers, Karl Rove) to do it. Young people are not that "into" Obama any more, Dems like me are sad how far right he has gone, and the Democratic Party in general appear so weak, the DNC has little or no fight in them, at least to me.

I realize the general populous is not going to become interested in the 2012 race until this time next year and a lot can happen between now and then. The trajectory so far, however, is not promising. Primarying the President won't work, it never does. Anyone who thinks POTUS is a shoo-in had better do a re-think. The right wants him gone and they will do whatever it takes to make it so. I hope I'm wrong..

1. You are right, they will do whatever it takes,
starting by playing with State election and voter registration rules and laws. If Dems don't get on these immediately the results will be our fault, as in 2 W 'selections.' rover seeing to all of this.

4. Obama will face a primary challenger. It is a question of WHO, not IF...

From what you wrote, you know why it is happening.

The party lacks leadership at the top, from the President.

7. The most viable, IMO, would be John Kerry and of course, he's close
to and a backer of POTUS. I'm hard put to think who a challenger other than him could be. Gore has moved on and I think he has nothing but a sour taste re the process. Who could blame him?

9. Only in your fantasy world will there be a primary challenger
The cards are not there. It is not going to happen. I agree with the thoughts and fears expressed by Monmouth. I think if the unemployment rate does not improve there is a better than 50/50 chance that a Romney presidency may be in our future. I am not giving up but this morning but I am not very encouraged.

12. And a Romney presidency, of course, will be as successful as the WI governorship.
But people are apparently too clueless to stop swinging over to the GOP for help.

And a Dem primary only enables that.

17. He will also face a 3rd Party challenge from The Left in the general
that will have NO problem finding funding from The RIGHT.
None of the current polls factor in a 3rd party challenge.

I share your doubts,
and feel it is a HUGE mistake to minimize the threat from the Republicans.
Focusing our attention on the Republican Clown Car (Bachmann, Palin, Romney, etc)
allows more serious threats to fly under the radar,
that can step out from The Wings at the last minute looking Acceptably Moderate.

8. I know that feeling
When I look at the republican candidates I laugh and say, "there's no way any of these clowns will make it to the White House". Then I remember George W Bush and realize anything is possible.

10. I can clearly remember a post a couple years back
"no way Rand Paul can beat a Democrat". I still have it bookmarked.

Seems to me that DUers often apply their preferences to the general voting public and refuse to acknowledge any difference of opinions. Because we feel strongly about an issue means other voters agree.

And their votes counts as much as ours.

11. Ah, yes
I can remember thinking Rand Paul was too "out there" to get elected, and now I try to remind myself that not all voters are sane and reasonable. It isn't even about Democratic preferences, as I can understand a lot of republicans getting elected in more conservative areas. I can understand people not agreeing with me or not liking my choice in candidates. What I can't understand is a large percentage of people voting for truly bizarre, sometimes even comical, candidates.

The movie "Idiocracy" is starting to less like a spoof and more like a prophecy.

13. Right-wing officials are doing everything they can to suppress the vote...
...for the young, the old, the poor and minorities - the election will be stolen in many different ways.

Since 2000, when the SC did the stealing, they've become bolder and bolder. Can't win with ideas, so they've moved on.

14. Welcome to reality!
All Obama's bending over to seem reasonable to Republicans has only earned him their undying hatred! In the process he has depressed his base that there is no way in hell he will get the kind of turnout he did in 2008. He is losing support from independents for his perceived weakness.
Add in election fraud and it is going to take a minor miracle to give him a second term. That is the reality.

15. Due to Citizens United the Democratic Party must unite and work 20x more to win in 2012
and it doesn't help that so many keyboard warriors spend their entire day attacking the President.
