1. I don't think they get minimum wage
Edited on Sat Jun-18-11 11:52 AM by Ter
Calling them names isn't the right thing to do. Many people who have never been in a union have a highly negative view of them. I certainly did when I was in my low 20's when I worked in a supermarket. I needed to be educated on life, I wasn't stupid or dumb.

2. Seriously...maybe because I was a child of union workers from NYC---I always loved them.
Although my parents took issue with them. When I saw the benefits they got---I had to say you didn't get that on your own.

3. Maybe they want to continue recieving a wage?
Rather than having Target close down the store?

9. Retail stores don't shut down
if it is in an ideal location. Given how much downsizing that has taken place already, if you work at a retail store that hasn't shut down yet since the economic crisis hit, it means your location is coveted.

Don't buy the fear mongering propaganda from retail managers and corporate.

10. It's more beneficial for Target for them to close it down rather than let them unionize
If they don't shut it down, it would encourage other stores to unionize. It would be a domino effect.

4. Reminds me of Universal Healthcare with Americans
Americans for the most part are very fearful people. When i interned in Silicon Valley i was amazed at how many apartment buildings had and promoted the idea of high fence walls and security. And how easy it is to get guns.

So i am not surprised they are afraid to unionize despite the obvious benefits. It is just like Single Payer Universal Healthcare where there is no downside but yet the people vote against their best interests out of ignorance and fear.

18. To be fair,
Being educated in one thing does not make one educated in another area. In fact, many people are talented in one area while being comically poor in another area of endeavor.

Or to give a more concrete example I prefer an attending Physician have a degree in medicine, and would generally decline to be treated for a physical ailment by a Dr who's PhD and training was in, say, classic Greek literature. But If I wanted to be educated on classic greek literature, I would be willing to go see that person.

11. This ignorance was started and is gladly being perpetuated by the
Republican propaganda and lies. Their non-stop repetition is very successful
too. About half of our nation believe their lies.

6. They are scared. Try to understand their aren't many jobs out there and
they know in the end they fear for their jobs. Who is going to pay for them when they lose their jobs.

12. I agree
We don't know what they've been told or what they are saying to each other. Without knowing the whole story, we can't judge their decision. A company as large as Target can be very intimidating and though management might not openly threaten their jobs, there could easily be unspoken threats. Its pretty easy to find reasons to get rid of an employee. Companies do it all the time.

8. Probably has something to do with the extreme anti-union video they show everyone
on their first day with the company. I remember them showing it to me when I was first hired by them and just laughing at the stupidity. Most of them were probably scared of losing their jobs if they voted for it.

13. Companies as large as Target have ways
to influence their employees and I've seen it done many times. The most common tactic is cutting someone's hours to the absolute minimum, usually forcing the employee to quit. They also can give 'difficult' employees the worse shifts and document every tiny infraction (even make them up sometimes) so they can have the paperwork necessary to fire those employees.

Retailers like Walmart, K-Mart, and Target hire predominately part time employees, who really aren't very concerned about unions or benefits - Students or housewives just looking for a little extra cash. Most full time employees are in management, so they aren't inclined to be pro-union.

So it may look like their decision was stupid to an outsider, but having worked years in retail, I cannot say I'm surprised. You say "they will continue to receive minimum wage", but they might be wanting "to continue to receive ANY wage at all".

14. I'm amazed at your mind-reading powers!
It's wonderful to know that you would be able to tell us all what motivated these workers' votes and decisions!

The vote was not completely one-sided. It may take several tries to get a union there, and I sincerely hope that the organizers don't give up trying.

Target, actually all, retail workers have my respect. :)

15. Most people have very little means to live by.
Target (The Friendly Face of Walmart) knows this. They use propaganda to instill fear into their workers so they will not join a union.

19. Obviously
...noone here has been through a company anti-union intimidation push. You have no idea how much pressure companys can put on employees. That's why we were promised the FREE CHOICE ACT - which, among a host of other campaign promises, died a quiet death...
