Obama takes credit for Chrysler's rebound
Obama takes credit for Chrysler's rebound
By Michael O'Brien - 05/24/11 01:19 PM ET

President Obama hailed Chrysler's repayment of its 2009 bailout loans on Tuesday, taking credit for the automaker's revival.

Obama said it was because of his own action that Chrysler was able to rebound from its government-supervised bankruptcy that resulted in its acquisition by the Italian automaker Fiat. It was part of a broader effort by Democrats to build political support for the president based on the 2009 bailouts of Chrysler and General Motors.

"Supporting the American auto industry required making some tough decisions, but I was not willing to walk away from the workers at Chrysler and the communities that rely on this iconic American company," Obama said in a statement. "I said if Chrysler and all its stakeholders were willing to take the difficult steps necessary to become more competitive, America would stand by them, and we did."

The president and his allies both seem to believe the rescue of Chrysler and GM is a big part of Obama's political arsenal, and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) trotted out two former Midwestern governors, Michigan's Jennifer Granholm (D) and Ohio's Ted Strickland (D), to acclaim the Chrysler news.

1. And Obama is right.
He was the one to fight the repukes who wanted to let the auto industry die and fade away. He fought them and won and now the industry is making a big comeback. I am proud of my president!!

2. As he should
The Republicans were dead set against this. They called GM Government Motors (and still do in some cases).

Now some Republicans are touting the jobs created by GM and Chrysler.

3. He's right. The GOP, given the chance, would have killed it.

4. The right tried so hard
to kill the domestics this really has to hurt. I remember the calls to boycott GM and Chrysler vehicles from the teabagging assholes who are probably still waiting on their Sequoia's to arrive after the quake.

6. Please, there were people on DU who were pushing the same end.
They didn't want anything to be saved.

10. That's true
and isn't it nice to know that they were so wrong about it and weren't able to get the "let them go bankrupt" crap to carry the day.

5. As he should. When people were complaining from both sides about this.
He stuck to his guns and saved the automotive industry.

9. Thank you Mr. President. I can't imagine what shape Michigan would be in had GM/Chrysler been
allowed to fail.
