Healthcare Reform starts to show Results. Fewer Young Adults Uninsured
http://www.gallup.com/poll/147422/Fewer-Year-Olds-Uninsured-2011.aspx

Twenty-four percent of Americans aged 18 to 26 were uninsured in January through April of this year, down from 28% in 2010, and fewer than in 2009 and 2008. Americans in this age group became eligible to remain on their parents' health insurance plans under a provision of the new healthcare law that began in September 2010.

We can all agree this is a good thing, right?

1. A young man in my family just crushed his heels, broke in ankles,
upper leg bones and his pelvis. What is there in the bill that will help him and how does he access it?

6. Lots of options
Did this incident happen in the course of his work? If so is he going for workman's comp?

If it did not occur at work, is he employed? Does he have insurance through work?

Is he under 26 years old? If so, can either of his parents insure him on their plans? If not why not?

As he is apparently disabled, can he apply for Medicare/Medicaid?

14. No fell from 28 foot ladder and decided to jump instead of going
head first. He is working for a small company and I don't know how much insurance they have. He will go for workman's comp but at the moment he is having one surgery after another. He is under 26 and we don't know how it will come out - if he is disabled for life or what. Just reading the first answer to the post has given me a lot of answers to start at.

18. That small company should be sued out of business
Absolute negligence that this person was put in that position of going up a 28 foot ladder with no safety harness.

Then he should go for Medicade/Medicare SS disability

And before anyone tut-tuts the small company, they were heartless enough to take away someone's ability to work for the rest of his life, then they should pay restitution for it.

19. It may come to that - but we need to wait to see how this comes out.
Thanks for the suggestions.

5. I would describe it as a step in the right direction.
Of course the rest of the demographics are not trending in the right direction. And speaking as a clinic director I can tell you that I haven't seen anything in the current legislation that will stop or even slow down the worst of the insurance company predations.

7. Most provisions do not kick in until 2014. At that time, we'll see. n/t

9. You may be right, but I can tell you from experience...
... that the insurance companies will do ANYTHING to screw ANYONE, and there is very little in the bill to change that. While it is better than nothing, it is also worse than a single payer or even public option.

It's a mixed bag IMO - some good and not much great, but it could have been soooooo much better.

13. My son is one of them. I am eternally grateful
As were many of my patients who were covered by THEIR parents policies. It IS a Good Thing. So are the many other POSITIVE aspects of the Act

It will have real benefits for real people. Sorry, now I sound like a beef commercial.

16. Nothing in the article tells us how many of these newly insured
will be able to actually access care and how many will continue to have out of pocket expenses that are so high they still won't be able to see a doctor.

Celebrating that the insurance companies have been handed a relatively healthy age group to gouge premiums from makes no sense.

17. Yes--it's just that the underlying value is morally repugnant
Namely that young people whose parents can afford to insure them deserve health care, and those whose parents can't, don't.

For profit healthcare makes everyone happy. Shame on you rest of the world for trying to trick us into thinking for profit doesnt work.
