Osama Bin Laden Evidence: Al Qaeda Considered 9/11 Anniversary Attack

By PIERRE THOMAS (@PierreTABC) , RICHARD ESPOSITO, JACK DATE and JACK CLOHERTY
May 5, 2011

Some of the first information found in Osama bin Laden's compound indicates al Queda considered attacking train services in the U.S. Getty Images

An early read of the materials seized from Osama bin Laden's compound has not yet produced evidence of a specific, imminent terror plot against the U.S., but does show the group continues to have murderous aspirations, according to U.S. officials and to documents obtained by ABC News.

The trove of evidence U.S. Navy SEALs recovered during their raid of Bin Laden's compound, which cost the al Qaeda leader his life, shows that al Qaeda remained fixated on so-called soft targets like transportation.

A new bulletin issued tonight by the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security and obtained by ABC News describes the terror organization's chilling desire to derail a train.

"As of February 2010, al-Qa'ida was allegedly contemplating conducting an operation against trains at an unspecified location in the United States on the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001," the document reads, using an alternate spelling for bin Laden's terror group. "As one option, al-Qa'ida was looking into trying to tip a train by tampering with the rails so that the train would fall off the track at either a valley or a bridge."

"You can't guard hundreds of miles of track," said ABC News consultant and former White House counterterrorism advisor Richard Clarke. "And if they can get to one location that is not well guarded and put explosives on it or do something to cause the train to derail that's a lot easier than going after an aircraft."

4. Oh, goodie.
Now we will need to endure a grope fest before we can board the train. How long till we have strip searches to enter shopping malls?

I've got an idea, supposed we stop making terrorists by vacating all those countries we are in, that hate us for our freedoms?

18. Umm.. no you won't. The plan wasn't to blow up the train, but to plant explosives on the tracks.
Searching boarding passengers wouldn't do a thing against people planting explosives on the tracks. For that, one would require security cameras, and patrolling guards/dogs around the tracks.

Bush ignored the August 2001 PDB, he was rightly blamed for ignoring a threat. In fact, it became one of the charges for impeachment.

Obama is not Bush.

Questions?

19. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is (D)emocratic Underground, is it not?
Put aside the fact that we were lied into a war for big oil, Bush had clearly laid a foundation for mistrust. So you're right, I never believed anything out of his lying mouth. Obama hasn't given me any reason to distrust him or his team, in matters of foreign policy. New day, New President and he's a (D)emocrat, and I'm assuming it's still okay to express admiration, and indeed trust, for a (D)emocratic president, on a forum called (D)emocratic Underground, right?

Why should be we believe anything Bush said?

Are you claiming we have to believe or not believe consistently, no matter what?

31. I found that so odd.
The husband is from "around" LA and was shocked when he saw how many trains we have in Chicago. I had no idea that LA was so rail deficient.

But, yeah. Talking about international criminals attacking trains makes folks from Chicago a bit nervous. You have to consider the hundreds (thousands?) of miles of unprotected track. Add that to how many pass over bridges and/or under cities and you've got a recipe for tragedy.

22. This is further proof of President Obama's greatness
he could have taken the cowardly safe route and just bombed the compound. Instead he took the risky approach and came back with a treasure trove of information that will completely disrupt Al Qaeda (at least for a year or two) and should kill their finances as well.

25. I ride the DC Metro Daily and the last 3 days I've seen cops with semi-auto rifles
dangling from their chests within the metro stations. I was just telling my office mate, this doesn't necessarily make me feel any safer since terrorists have a penchant for bombs.
