Sen. John Kerry proposes tax relief to low-income families

Sen. John Kerry proposes tax relief to low-income families

By Kevin P. O’Connor

WASHINGTON — Sen. John Kerry introduced legislation Thursday that he said would provide tax relief for low income families and more than 100,000 children in Massachusetts.

<...>

The law proposed would allow individuals to earn more money before they have to pay taxes and equalizes benefits for married couples. Kerry also proposed new rules that would simplify who can qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit.

The law allows many low-income people to reduce their tax bill when they take low wage or part time work.

“The last thing our tax code should do is penalize people for finding jobs,” Kerry said. “Folks below the poverty level are so far in the hole that they simply won’t be able to dig their way out unless we throw them a rope. In this economy, every penny counts, and this bill offers common sense help to families who are hurting the most.”

1. “The last thing our tax code should do is penalize people for finding jobs,” Kerry said.
Another common sense solution proposed by my favorite senator.

2. This is reintroduced from last Congress, but
no one pays attention to low-income Americans until it's convenient to spin.

3. Most poor families rely on
their tax returns, to buy the large items that they can't save for. Some use it to get into a better apartment or living arrangement.

5. What a good Senator and Obama ally. I wish he had won in 2004. Damn Ken Strickland!
Kasich & Co. will try and steal it again in 2012, no doubt. Ditto with Florida.

6. You wonder if the federal justice department could monitor
complaints from Ohio - if they are like the type of garbage that Blackwell pulled.

He is a great Senator - I hope this gets passed, but I doubt the Republicans in the House and many in the Senate will allow it.

7. I don't know, but it makes me queasy to think about it.
I understand what you're saying about the chances for passage, but it's good to get the iron in the fire now, because 2012 is around the corner. Something tells me that many in the Teabagger House won't be able to overcome President Obama's coattails. If Democrats win back the House and increase their numbers in the Senate, I'm sure this will be one of the first things they'll address.

Can you tell I'm an optimist? ;)

8. Absolutely agree - for the reasons you list and to define what our values are
This is not like 2009 - 2010, when a "better" but not passable bill could have used time needed to pass what could be passed.

One think that disturbs me is that many Democrats (not Kerry) are ASSUMING the Republican and media view that we need to drastically cut spending, but we can't raise taxes - because of the poor economy. That is garbage. The cuts to money that go to people who need money instantly has a greater impact than dollars to millionaires.

9. I'm for it. But I want to know how about helping the lower middle class earning less than $50,000

:kick:

People complain about the poor and wealthy pols, but poo-poo people and legislation (though the GOP will try to block it. :grr:) that helps the poor.

Guess it isn't their favorite liberal (or Obama) that's writing this, so it went unnoticed.
