"Tomorrow's GOP Social Security talking point today"
Greg Sargent

*Tomorrow's GOP Social Security talking point today: Also key in the above link: Well aware of the popularity of these programs, Boehner is arguing that the public only opposes cuts to them because Americans are unaware of how bad our fiscal situation is:

"Once they understand how big the problem is, I think people will be more receptive to what the possible solutions may be."

Ezra Klein: How Americans want -- and don't want -- to balance the budget

TPM: McCaskill: I Will Vote Against Social Security Cuts

<...>

This week we have a lot of tough decisions to make -- but I can tell you a few things for sure:

1. I don't think anyone is going to propose cutting Social Security benefits -- if they do, I'll vote against those cuts.
2. I'm going to do everything I can to protect core education programs -- but, as with most parts of the budget, I'm looking for ways to be more efficient in the administration of these important programs.
3. I agree that we absolutely need cuts in the discretionary defense budget -- we just cannot tolerate any more Pentagon waste.
4. One of the first items on the chopping block should be subsidies for big oil corporations which are among the richest and most profitable companies in the world.

<...>

Well, Boehner is proposing it, and the media and others are going to help promote the RW meme in an attempt to confuse Americans.

1. I doubt that there are many people that are that *unaware* of how bad things are
Anyway, as has been mentioned repeatedly here and elsewhere, Social Security has absolutely nothing to do with the deficit and whatever "tweaks" the program needs to remain solvent indefinitely are definitely NOT what the Republicans are (likely) proposing IMHO.

2. It is too bad we have such weakkneed Democrats. Social
Security should have been treated separately from
all other programs. From the get go, the Democrats
, this includes our President, should have said
SS needs reform but we will reform it as a separate
entity. SS has its own Funding. Stand Alone Program.

Aha, have they skimmed off SS to pay for other programs
and rather than pay back the SS Fund, they will just
destroy the Program??

Do they want to use the SS Fund to pay down the Deficit??
A Pox on both their houses.

3. Republicans have been trying to sell this hard since 2005
The public isn't buying what they're selling.

They're simply trying to bully the issue now that they control the House.
