Obama, in call to German chancellor: Gadhafi must go 'now'

Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi must step down "now," President Obama said Saturday in a call with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Obama told the German leader that it's come time for Gadhafi to go, according to a White House readout of the call.

"The president stated that when a leader’s only means of staying in power is to use mass violence against his own people, he has lost the legitimacy to rule and needs to do what is right for his country by leaving now," the White House said.

Obama spoke to Merkel a day after imposing major sanctions against Libya and Gadhafi, who's cracked down on anti-government protesters over the past week.

5. Well basically we have no real leverage to go into Libya.

Out of western nations we're the one that has the least to do with Libya---it's mainly European nations that have the most to do with them. I say they take a page out of Obama's interaction with Egypt. You leave the people alone to over come this sort of mistreatment.

2. British papers say that Pres. Obama called Sarkozy, Merkel & Cameron before the Motown concert

... to discuss military intervention.

The Motown concert took place hours after 600+ Americans and warships finally left Libyan waters after 3 days of rough seas delayed their departure. Also, it was only yesterday that the last Brits were evacuated.

Today, the CIC goes public with his condemnation, after the lives of Americans and those of his EU partners are safe from harm. I am very happy that President Obama is in charge of foreign policy instead of some of his detractors here who were screeching for him to do this earlier, mistaking his caution for timidity without any consideration of his responsibilities as CIC and as an EU ally.

This is why I am a proud Obama supporter!

He must give priority to our citizens and allies. And until there is some concensus among out allies about what should be done about Gadaffi speaking too sone would have just needlessly endangered the lives of those who were trying to get out of Libya.

11. In his campaign, he said he would march with workers fighting for collective

bargaining rights. So what happened to that promise?
