Yesterday, the Colorado State Senate Education Committee held a hearing on the ASSET bill, which would allow undocumented children, who were brought to the U.S. through no fault of their own, to go to college paying in-state tuition, as long as they promise to work to attain citizenship.
One of the witnesses against the bill was a Stan Weekes, speaking for the Colorado Alliance for Immigration Reform.
He started his testimony by demanding that the chairman (Senator Bob Bacon, a truly awesome progressive) "order the Sergeants at Arms to clear the committee room of everyone except members of the public." By members of the public, he meant citizens. In other words, he wanted all undocumented people removed from the room (and the country.)
Chairman Bacon told Weekes that he was not going to have the Sergeants at Arms check the IDs of everyone in the room.
Weekes then demanded that all witnesses testifying for or against the ASSET bill have their names and addresses recorded and released to the public (which is required by state law.)
Later, one of the advocates for the bill explained that they had only one undocumented student testifying in favor of the bill, and advised all the students against testifying, because a couple years ago, Weekes took the public record of the hearing, with the testimony of kids stating they're undocumented, along with names and addresses, and turned it in to ICE.
Thankfully, the Education Committee voted to pass ASSET, 5-2 in favor. Unfortunately, I had to leave the room before the vote was taken. I only wish I could have seen the look on Weeke's subhuman, psychopathic face.
