8. It's not 50%
It's 55%. At least according to this site:

http://dailycaller.com/2011/02/09/chris-christies-approval-ratings-rise-in-new-jersey/

Who is the Daily Caller? Beats me, but this is a Quinnipiac poll being cited, it's probably not a cooked up story.

I know, many here wonder why this is the case, but I work customer service in NJ, and a lot of people expressed positive things about Christie right after his election. The only people who mention him any more are those who indicate that they work for the state.

That's why the protests against state cutbacks have to stay civil and nonviolent, or they risk having a backlash effect. You've got to get the mushy middle on your side, and not look like the crazed lunatic fringe, or the reich wing will exploit that behavior.

Completely slanted as you'd expect.

30. The Daily Caller is on the right
As to Quinnipac, it is an established polling firm, but it has a consistent bias towards Republicans in NJ. It was the ONLY poll that showed that NJ would be close for Kerry in 2004 - which was completely wrong. They showed a narrow race for Corzine for Governor in 2005 - and he won VERY easily and they showed Kean, jr beating Menendez. All of these were off by a pretty big margin.

But, Christie HAS polled around 50 in all polls. I am hoping that just like when he was Morris County freeholder, his favorability will continue to decline. As freeholder, he lost the support of the Republicans.

In a recent poll, he was tied with Corey Booker, Mayor of Newark, in spite of Booker not having near the name recognition.

31. Again, thanks for the clarification
Had no idea I was on a Tucker Carlson site, I guess I didn't see the bow tie! I just wanted to find something quickly to put up for the person responding to the OP that there was no link to anything. I suppose if I had spent a bit more time on it, I could have found a more neutral site that said the same thing.

If I recall correctly, the reason that Christie lost some Repuke support in NJ is that he was not reich-wing enough for them. When you get about an hour away from NYC, NJ looks like any other part of flyover country. If I recall correctly, the far right was supporting Steve Lonegan, who makes Jesse Helms look like Jesse Jackson.

In the poll that you cited, was it a poll pitting Christie vs. Booker in a head-to-head race for governor, or just showing that the two simply had similar favorability ratings? Booker really got a lift when that Zuckerberg kid decided to blow some billions on Newark's school system, he was featured on many national TV programs, and the local news affiliates ran snippets of that footage. Booker's gotten a really big boost in name recognition, lately, that has allowed him to catch up.

32. I was speaking of when he lost support on the freeholder board
in my county - and it was because of his personality.

The Booker/Christie poll was a head to head poll. They did measure name recognition - and though I agree that Booker has gotten press - all of it good, his name recognition was lower. (I decided not to be lazy and found it - it was done by PPP, which is a liberal firm, but its track record is good - in fact, in 2010, it was often less good for us than other polls.

Both Christie and Booker would win 42 percent of the vote, according to the poll by liberal-leaning firm Public Policy Polling.

Booker, who is unknown to 38 percent of the state, has a 46 percent approval rating, and just a 16 percent disapproval rating, the poll found.

http://www.northjersey.com/news/state/politics/011311_Poll_Christie_Booker_race_for_governor_too_close_to_call.html

Another report that I had read spoke of there being more undecided Democrats - most of whom did not know of Booker. To me, this suggests the results are likely to favor Booker if he continues to get the kind of attention he has.

34. Well, there's negative attention, too
Like I said, you get an hour away from NYC, and NJ is a whole different place. In that place, all you have to do is connect Booker to Newark, and you'll have a lot of people who would automatically discount him for that.

Still, it is interesting, and we're going to have to see how it all plays out in 2013. I expect that the 2012 election will have an influence, just like the 2008 election did.

36. I live about an hour west of NYC in NJ
Booker gave a well received speech, which I missed, at a local Jewish Center. I have phone banked and canvased in many parts of Morris County. This is a HIGHLY Republican county - lots of old money Republicans in the wealthier parts of the county.

33. There are a number of polls with slightly different numbers.
They vary, but the message is still the same as the OP's... it's higher than a progressive should be comfortable seeing (particularly in NJ).

Doesn't mean that it will last. Some of the decisions may not "hurt" yet.

11. The higher he climbs, the more painful the fall...
Christie is an idiot...the only reason he would be that high is because of the self-depreciating "humor" he portrays.

I wish he would run for the GOP nomination and win...that would be a fantastic gift for us...almost everyone, (outside of the people polled), see this oaf as a simplistic baboon...:D

17. Even Mika B. on Morning Joe today was getting skeptical of his popularity.
She said that Christie was doing schtick and she wanted to see more substantive words than his schtick. That's the first time I've seen her be in the least critical of Christie.

800,000 exactly and current employees I'm not buying these polls the whole state work force here could determine the next Governor election in NJ. I bet the next NJ Governors election will be very close

We have Dan Malloy. They have Chris Christie. Two governors who couldn't be more different.

24. you obviously have not been to my county
We are an older county (but the one just south of me is worse) and when it comes to education, most of these people's kids are grown and gone, and they have an "I got mine screw you" mentality.

They could care less about funding public schools cause their kids have graduated years ago. All they care about is their property taxes and seem to fail to see that good schools are good for the whole community.

phenomenon, but I doubt his shtick will sell forever: eventually, you have to come up with results, not talk.
