Democracy is such a nice dream....
Russia, 1990: Revolution--from communism to democracy. In the shor term, economic crises after crises. Today, Russia is not so better off than before.

India, late 1940s: World's largest democracy. Still one of countries in the world with more poor people per area (even more thna some African countries)

Historically: Industrialised countries never had democracy as per the definition of democracy: Chang, H-J, 2003, Kicking Away the Ladder: Development Strategy in Historical Perspective, London: Anthem Press

It's so nice to dream about democracy and pushing for it as western countries have done (Iraq's a democracy is it safer, more secure, better off in terms of GDP/HDI?), but when you wake up you get an entirely different story.

It's just nice to dream about democracy...
