I am a Democrat because of programs like Social Security, Medicare and the GI BIll
And because for 70 years the Democratic Party and the vast majority of politicians elected with a (D) after their name recognized that those programs, and policies like them, lifted people out of poverty and were successful.

I am not a Democrat who will willingly accept or just standby and watch while a politician or groups of politicians - especially, those politicians with a (D) after their name - weaken Social Security or standby and watch while proposals circulate cutting veterans programs especially while a war is going on.

The concept of primaries exist for a reason.

So, what kind of a Democrat are you?

3. "Democrat" does not mean what it meant 70 years ago...not even 50 years ago..
Edited on Sat Jan-22-11 01:43 PM by BrklynLiberal
We have become a plutocracy, and those with money, rule. They want to undo everything that was done under FDR....even some of the modern "Democrats" fall into line behind this.

Their campaigns are funded by the wealthy, and once they have power, they do not want to give it up.

Lord Acton:
"I cannot accept your canon that we are to judge Pope and King unlike other men with a favourable presumption that they did no wrong. If there is any presumption, it is the other way, against the holders of power, increasing as the power increases. Historic responsibility has to make up for the want of legal responsibility.Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men, even when they exercise influence and not authority: still more when you superadd the tendency or certainty of corruption by full authority. There is no worse heresy than the fact that the office sanctifies the holder of it."

4. So you are willing to just accelerate the process of sending people
sliding back into poverty?

I am trying very hard to figure out what your comment has to do with my question:

What kind of Democrat are you?

I ask respectfully btw

8. Well...As Implied By Your Post...
Maybe the Democrats should reclaim what they used to be 70 years ago. Back then, there was a difference between Democrats and Republicans.

5. I'm another FDR Democrat so fuck DINOs even if they are occupying the White House and think de-
funding Social Security is a good way to get re-elected.

6. Yes, I'm with you and also because at times in my life I was
proud to be a union member. Any Democrat who passes laws that embolden corporations and weaken labor are not ones that will get my vote.

7. I'm a Democrat because my party's two founders Jefferson & Madison campaigned for office in the
1790s-1800s on platforms that emphasized maximum individual and state rights and minimum federal government.

They coauthored the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions that opposed an omnipotent federal government and acknowledge the authority and powers retained by We the People in the 9th Amendment on unenumerated unalienable/inalienable rights and the 10th Amendment with its focus on power.

It's entirely possible that some who call themselves Democrats in the 21st century have abandoned Jefferson and Madison principles upon which our party was established and have become proponents of an all-powerful central government.

10. I'm the kind who believes in facts, not completely unsubstantiated smear campaigns.
The kind claiming, say, that Democrats are trying to destroy Social Security. :eyes:

11. Not all Democrats, just a few are doing exactly that::putting substantial cracks
in the foundation of the most successful anti-poverty program ever devised.

And may I kindly suggest that a good use of one's time is starting to focus on actions of elected so called Democrats and not their words alone?

12. Current SS program has evolved extensively since the original act.
The Social Security Act (Act of August 14, 1935) {H. R. 7260}
PREAMBLE

An act to provide for the general welfare by establishing a system of Federal old-age benefits, and by enabling the several States to make more adequate provision for aged persons, blind persons, dependent and crippled children, maternal and child welfare, public health, and the administration of their unemployment compensation laws; to establish a Social Security Board; to raise revenue; and for other purposes.
