Poll question: Should Pres. Obama keep his campaign promise of continuing the Afghanistan war?
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x3213">Poll question: Should we expect our politicians to fulfill their campaign promises?

I have contradicting opinions.

Opinion I: Politicians should keep their campaign promises.

Opinion II: Pres. Obama should end the Afghanistan war.

This poll is about your opinion on the subjects Pres. Obama, campaign promises, and the Afghanistan war.

1. If he's going to keep promises
I got a long list of stuff that he should attend to first.

Nobody but the mil-ind complex supports these wars, and we can't afford them anyway.

2. this whole question is classic misdirection for propaganda....
I mean, it boils down to erecting the strawman that "Keeping campaign promises is always better than breaking campaign promises." That's a patently ridiculous notion that ignores the nature of the campaign promises. Eradicating the Jews from Europe did not become a good thing just because Hitler campaigned on the promise to try. Fighting a war against Afghanistan for no good reason is not a good thing either, whether Obama promised it or not.

4. No, your post is the straw man.
"Keeping campaign promises is always better than breaking campaign promises." are your words, not mine. You constructed this argument and then argued against it. That is a classic straw man, though I suspect your false logic comes from lack of critical thinking, as opposed to malice, so I forgive you. :-)

3. Well if he told us
during the campaign that Afghanistan was the "good war," it must be a wonderful thing. And we don't have any reason to complain. Our job now is to go along with the escalation and support the troops. And stick our heads in the sand. And kiss obama's ass.....

5. Obama should decide if remaining in Afghanistan is in the best interest of the United States.
(1) What will be the effect of a return of the Taliban government on Afghanistan and the region?
(2) Would the departure of the US help or hinder Pakistan's efforts to battle the Taliban? (Would it be easier to make peace with their own relgious fruitcakes if the US were not there?)
(3) What would be the long term strategy to handl Al Qaeda? (Would it be better to puruse terrorists as criminals rather than as a military threat?)

There are a lot of other questions that should be asked, but if leaving appears to mkae things even slightly more stable than staying, it would be in US interest to do so.
