Seems to me, most folks in Congress (and that goes for both parties) would have a hard time passing up a big fat juicy tax cut:

I mean, nothing's more fun than treating politics like a soap opera. You know, Obama called me retarded, Obama is a corporatist, Obama caused me some (add grievance here). But as I see it. There's a multitude of reasons, hell maybe even a million reasons, that these tax cuts were not allowed to expire.

2. it's not congress brokering this 'deal'
It's Obama.

Reasons? Let's hear them. So far the 'reasons' from Obama are pretty much all bullshit.

Had he stood firm this wouldn't have happened. He lacks either the will or the strength to make a stand.

3. Despite what they say, Obama and wealthy Dems don't want to
give up money with a tax increase. Congressmen frequently claim to support things they are against and know will not pass. Or like voting against their own pay raise when they know it's passing. Looks good back home in a close election.
