White House Proposes Payroll-Tax Holiday .Article Video Comments more in Politics & Policy ».

By JONATHAN WEISMAN And JOHN D. MCKINNON

WASHINGTON—Aides to President Barack Obama are proposing a one-year reduction in the payroll tax as part of negotiations with Congress on a broader package to stave off income-tax increases due to take effect next year.

Under the White House plan, the Social Security tax paid by workers would drop temporarily by 2 percentage points, to 4.2% from 6.2%, a person familiar with the proposal said. For a worker earning $40,000, the tax savings would be $800.

12. Ahh...Thanks.....I should have known...a One Year Reduction in Social Security TAX!
So those folks will lose a year of their "pay in" to SS...which will hit them somewhere down the road. But, the young think SS is dead and they would be better investing in Wall Street! So...all is good with what Obama is proposing.

Once Obama drops that...it will be Hell to Pay for SS Deductions to get reinstated...

First Step to Privatizing SS...but "hush...we aren't supposed to talk about that."

11. So when the $40K and less crowd loses this break, the $250K crowd gives up something, too?
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 05:52 PM by BeyondGeography
If they're trying to create some linkage for the next round, maybe I'm starting to see the logic. However, this break only lasts one year and the BushCo rates extend for two, so...not good. Not to mention, we can't afford it and it can't be helpful to SS.

I've seen very postive coverage of Obama Reinstating the BUSH TAX CUTS.. Wall Street is very happy (CNBC) and (Bloomberg Business) and all is good. Stock Market is very happy about this.

OBAMA...THE SECOND BEST PRESIDENT we DEMS EVER HAD! I can't wait to see the EUPHORIA OVER OBAMA'S SECOND TERM! IT will be VERY GOOD..Don't you think? HE SAVED THE BANKS AND AMERICA....

It's all good.. except that it won't last into the SECOND TERM...when "HUMPTY DUMPTY ...FALLS OFF THE WALL!

He's SO COOL....we will support him like we did with CLINTON's SECOND TERM...when MONICA ...FLIPPED HER THONG...and it ALL CAME TUMBLING DOWN. Except .........we STILL LOVE BILL CLINTON!

It's amazing what MEDIA can DO and PUBLIC RELATIONS GUYS/GALS can do to MASSAGE THE MESSAGE! It TASTES GREAT....SUGAR ON THE TONGUE........It's GOOD!

But, given how Obama see's Reagan..as an "inspiration" it's something we need to see and think about.

Obama and Michelle came of Age under Reagan. I can understand why they think "THOSE WERE THE BEST YEARS OF OUR LIVES!"

Michelle has said she "Loved the Brady Bunch...TV Show." I did, too and so did my young daughter at the time..and my daughter still sees Reagan as a "Kindly Uncle."

Maybe Michelle and Barak thought Reagan WAS the "Kindly Old Uncle" and he was so much BIGGER THAN LIFE that the rest of the Dems or Repugs that THEY KNEW...Growing Up.

I think it's important for many of us "oldies" who remember JFK...THE PROMISE...to understand that many of those who came after us remember the REAGAN YEARS...as THE GOOD TIMES.

I can't fault them on their memories..but MY MEMORIES GO TO ASSASSINATIONS and TURMOIL AND STRIFE to GET US Out of VIETNAM and to END WARS! AND to BRING EQUALITY TO "THE PEOPLE!"

It all got lost under REAGAN...but for a GENERATION...REAGAN was the LAST AMERICAN COWBOY...and he was BELOVED because he Represented MOVIES FROM HOLLYWOOD...where the "WHITE HAT COWBOY...always WINS over BLACK HAT DISRUPTOR!

MEMORIES: If anyone cares to listen from long ago:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bdvnTfjsngE

MEMORIES............of that time.....those times and the CONTRAST!

Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 06:48 PM by RBInMaine
this was absolutely the right thing to do. Anyone who says otherwise never had to govern anything. Children getting some kind of Christmas is at stake. People being able to keep their homes is at stake. People being able to put food on the table is at stake. As he said, we can fight over this again for 2012, but right now we need to do the compromise and get people fed. Thanks Mr. President. Anyone who has had a middle school civics lesson understands that governing is the art of compromise. You are doing the right thing.
